When to go

June-September is warm and dry, best for the outdoors. Spring brings cherry blossoms; autumn through winter is mild but often drizzly.

Airport to the city

Canada Line (SkyTrain) → Downtown

From Vancouver International Airport (YVR) station, the Canada Line runs to Waterfront Station downtown without changes. Trips starting at the airport add the YVR AddFare to the regular fare.

Getting around

SkyTrain

Light rail linking the airport, Downtown, Richmond and more. Fares depend on zones, but all travel after 6:30 p.m. on weekdays and on weekends is a 1-Zone fare. Tap in and tap out.

Compass Card & tap to pay

Tap a Compass Card, contactless credit card or mobile wallet at the gates. Using the same card, you can transfer between bus, SkyTrain and SeaBus on one fare for up to 90 minutes.

Buses

Cover the whole city. Bus trips are always a 1-Zone fare, and you only tap in when boarding.

SeaBus

A passenger ferry linking Waterfront Station downtown and Lonsdale Quay in North Vancouver in about 12 minutes — great skyline views.

Downtown

Good for: First visit, transport

The SkyTrain and SeaBus hub, close to Stanley Park and the seawall, with many hotels.

Gastown

Good for: Historic streets, dining & bars

Vancouver's birthplace, with cobblestones and brick buildings, a short walk from Waterfront Station.

Yaletown

Good for: Stylish dining, waterfront walks

Converted warehouses full of restaurants and bars near the False Creek seawall, with a Canada Line station.

Kitsilano

Good for: Beaches, relaxed local vibe

A residential area with beaches, parks and cafés near Granville Island — a quieter stay.

North Vancouver & Richmond

Good for: Mountains and canyons / near the airport, Asian food

North Vancouver is a SeaBus ride away and the gateway to mountains and canyons. Richmond is near the airport and packed with Asian restaurants.

  1. Stanley Park & the seawall

    A large forested park beside downtown. The seawall around it is about 9 km — 2-3 hours on foot or about 1 hour by bike.

  2. Vancouver Aquarium

    An aquarium inside Stanley Park showcasing Pacific coast marine life. Check official information for admission.

  3. Granville Island

    A small island in False Creek with a public market, studios and galleries. Great for grazing, and you can cross by small ferry.

  4. Capilano & Lynn Canyon suspension bridges

    Suspension bridges over deep North Vancouver canyons. Capilano is a paid attraction (check official information for admission); Lynn Canyon's bridge is in a public park. Check that it is open before you go.

  5. Grouse Mountain

    A North Vancouver peak reached by aerial tram, with views over the city and sea, and snow fun in winter. Check official information for admission.

  6. Queen Elizabeth Park

    A hilltop park south of downtown with flower gardens and city and mountain views.

  7. Whistler day trip

    About 2 hours by car along the Sea to Sky Highway between ocean and mountains; famous for summer hiking and winter skiing. Check official road conditions in winter.

  8. Victoria day trip

    BC's capital: BC Ferries sails from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay in about 1 hour 35 minutes. Check the official BC Ferries site for schedules and reservations.

What to eat

BC salmon

The West Coast's signature fish, grilled, smoked or as sushi. Prices vary by restaurant.

BC seafood (spot prawns, oysters, crab)

Spot prawns are a short spring-season delicacy. Many places charge market price, so check first.
