Phu Quoc Travel Guide

Vietnam's largest island, in the Gulf of Thailand off the country's south-west coast near Cambodia. It is loved for white-sand beaches, sunsets and island-hopping in the south. The island is long and large, so whether you stay in the north, center or south shapes the whole trip.

When to go

November to April is the dry season, with calm, clear water that is best for beaches and island trips. May to October is the rainy season with frequent showers, and around July to September the west coast often has high waves that make swimming dangerous or cancel boats. Prices rise sharply over holidays and year-end.

Airport to the city

Grab and electric taxis

Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC) sits mid-way down the west coast, close to central hotels. The fare is fixed in the app, so no haggling.

Time about 15-20 min to Duong Dong, 30-40 min to the southCost shown in the app before you book (check official)

Airport taxi

Take a reputable company's taxi from the official rank and confirm the meter or fixed fare first.

Resort pickup

Getting around

Grab and electric taxis

The default way to get around. The island is big: north to south takes over an hour by car, so group far-off sights into one day.

Island buses

Cheap buses link the airport, town and sights in the south and north. Routes and frequency change often, so check the stop signs locally.

Resort shuttles

Many resorts run shuttles to town, the night market and beaches. Check times and booking when you check in.

Car with driver

To see the southern beaches, cable car and pepper farms in one day, hire a car with driver for a half or full day. Agree on hours and price first.

Where to stay

Duong Dong town

Good for: First visit, night market, value

The main town on the west coast, with the night market, restaurants and budget stays. Close to the airport.

Long Beach (south of Duong Dong)

Good for: Sunsets, beach resorts

Hotels and resorts line this long west-coast beach. Beautiful sunsets and a short ride to town.

An Thoi and the south

Good for: Island-hopping, cable car, beaches

Close to the harbor for island boats, the cable car and quiet beaches. 30-40 minutes by car to town.

The north (Ganh Dau and Bai Dai)

Good for: Families, theme park and safari, big resorts

Home to a theme park, a zoo and large resorts. Quiet, but nearly an hour by car to town or the south.

East coast (around Sao Beach)

Good for: White sand, peace and quiet

Calm, clear water. Few places to stay, so most people visit on a day trip.
