When to go

Late March-April (cherry blossoms around the castle) and October-November (Aso's pampas grass and autumn leaves) are best. Summers are hot, though the Aso highlands are cooler. June to early July is the rainy season, typhoons may come in August-September, and winter brings snow and icy roads to Aso.

Airport to the city

Airport limousine bus

The bus from Aso Kumamoto Airport (KMJ) to the city center (Sakuramachi and Kumamoto Station) — the usual choice.

Time about 55 min to Sakuramachi, about 65 min to Kumamoto StationCost about 1,400 JPY

Airport Liner + JR

Take the Airport Liner to JR Higo-Ozu Station (about 15 min) and change to the JR Hohi Line. Also handy for heading to Aso.

Time about 50-60 min to Kumamoto StationCost Liner about 200 JPY plus the JR fare (check official)

Rental car or taxi

If you are heading straight to Aso or Kurokawa Onsen, renting a car at the airport is easiest. Taxis to the city are pricey.

Time about 40 min to the cityCost taxi about 5,000-7,000 JPY

Getting around

Streetcar

The streetcar links Kumamoto Station, the castle area and downtown. It accepts national IC cards such as Suica as well as contactless credit cards.

City and sightseeing buses

Since November 2024, city buses no longer accept national IC cards such as Suica; use a contactless credit card or cash. A loop bus (Shiromeguri-n) serves the castle and main sights; ask the tourist office about day passes.

JR trains

Lines run toward Aso, and the Kyushu Shinkansen connects to Fukuoka and Kagoshima.

Rental car

Best for the spread-out Aso crater, grasslands and Kurokawa Onsen. Japan drives on the left, and you need an International Driving Permit.
