Miyazaki is the main city of Miyazaki Prefecture on the southeast coast of Kyushu. Palm-lined shores give it a southern feel, with sea views like Aoshima Island and the Devil's Washboard rocks and many shrines tied to Japanese mythology. Further south along the Nichinan Coast you can visit Udo Jingu, a shrine inside a sea cave, and the old castle town of Obi.

Top sights

  1. Aoshima Island & Aoshima Shrine

A small island about 1.5 km around, covered in subtropical plants such as Chinese fan palms (biro) over 300 years old. Aoshima Shrine in the middle of the island is linked to the Umisachi and Yamasachi myth and is known for matchmaking blessings. Open for worship from 6:00 until sunset and free (only the Hyuga Mythology Museum on the grounds charges entry). About a 10-minute walk from JR Aoshima Station.

  2. Devil's Washboard (Oni-no-Sentakuita)

Layers of hard sandstone and soft mudstone laid down under the sea about 7 million years ago were lifted up and worn by waves until they looked like a giant washboard. A National Natural Monument, it runs for about 8 km along the coast south of Aoshima. At low tide you can walk on the rocks, but wet spots are slippery, so wear good shoes. Sunrise is especially beautiful.

  3. Horikiri Pass

A viewpoint on the Nichinan Coast with rows of Canary Island date palms (phoenix) and blue sea. Looking down from the pass you can see the Devil's Washboard rocks in the waves. Take a bus toward Nichinan and get off at Horikiri-toge.

  4. Miyazaki Jingu

Enshrines Emperor Jimmu, Japan's first emperor in legend. The current buildings date from 1907 and use Sano cedar, a prized local wood. Gates open at 6:00 and close at 17:30 (October-April) or 18:30 (May-September); entry is free. A 10-minute walk from JR Miyazaki-Jingu Station. A big autumn festival and yabusame (horseback archery) are held every year.

  5. Udo Jingu (Nichinan)

A shrine whose main hall stands inside a sea cave open to the ocean; the area is a national Place of Scenic Beauty. From the square in front of the hall, throw clay 'undama' luck balls at the hollow on Turtle Rock below (men with the left hand, women with the right) to make a wish. Open 6:00-18:00. From the Miyazaki Airport bus stop, take a route bus toward Nichinan or Obi (about 60 min), get off at Udo Jingu and walk about 10 min. A notice of 7 September 2026 says heavy rain collapsed the road to parking lots 1 and 2, so check the latest notices.

  6. Obi castle town (Nichinan)

The castle town of the Ito clan of the Obi domain for about 280 years from 1588. Samurai-house gates and stone walls remain, and it was named an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in 1977. Around the Otemon gate, restored in 1978, are six historic facilities including Matsuo-no-Maru. Each costs JPY 300 for adults, or JPY 800 for a combined ticket to all six; open 9:30-17:00 (last entry 16:30), closed 29-31 December. A 15-minute walk from JR Obi Station.

What to eat

Charcoal-grilled jidori chicken

Miyazaki's signature chicken dish, seared over roaring flames so it takes on a smoky charcoal aroma. Firm and juicy, and it goes well with yuzu kosho.

Chicken nanban

Fried chicken dipped in a sweet vinegar sauce and topped with tartar sauce, a dish born in Miyazaki. The taste differs a little from place to place.

Hiyajiru

A local dish of chilled soup made from flaked grilled horse mackerel or sardine and grilled miso, with tofu, cucumber, shiso and myoga, poured over hot rice. Popular in the hot summer.

Karamen (spicy noodles)

Miyazaki's local noodles in a soy-based soup with garlic, garlic chives, minced meat and chili, finished with beaten egg. Some places let you choose the noodles and spice level.

Mangoes

Grown in the subtropical climate, Miyazaki mangoes are left in nets on the tree until they ripen fully and drop. In summer you can enjoy them fresh and in desserts.

Cheese manju

A famous Miyazaki sweet: cheese wrapped in a Western-style dough. The dough, cheese and shape vary by maker, so comparing them is part of the fun.
