When to go

The dry season from about December to May is sunny and comfortable. Roughly July to November is the wet season with frequent short showers, and typhoons can occur, sometimes cancelling flights. Prices rise during Asian holidays and summer breaks.

Getting around

Rental car

The easiest way to reach the south coast and far beaches. Driving is on the right. Bring your home licence and passport, and check with the rental company and official information on other requirements such as an International Driving Permit.

Tourist shuttle buses (trolleys)

Buses for visitors loop the Tumon hotel strip, malls and main sights. A single ride is about $3; check pass types, routes and times locally.

Taxi

Convenient for short trips but relatively expensive. Ask your hotel front desk to call one.

Hotel and mall shuttles

Some hotels and malls run free or low-cost shuttles. Ask at check-in.

Walking

The Tumon beachfront hotel strip and main street are walkable. The midday sun is strong, so bring a hat and water.

Tumon

Good for: First visit, beach and shopping

The heart of Guam, with resorts, malls and restaurants along calm Tumon Bay. Easy to get around on foot.

Tamuning

Good for: Value, airport access

Next to Tumon and close to the airport, with mid-range hotels and local restaurants.

Hagåtña

Good for: History, local feel

Guam's capital, with historic sites like Plaza de España and local markets. Fewer beach resorts than Tumon.

The south

Good for: Quiet stays, scenic drives

Relaxed villages and coastal scenery. You'll want a car.

Top sights

  1. Tumon Beach

    A shallow, calm lagoon protected by the reef, great for kids. Water shoes help protect your feet from coral and rocks.

  2. Two Lovers Point

    A clifftop lookout over Tumon Bay and the ocean. There's an entry fee, and sunset views are especially good.

  3. Ypao Beach Park

    A beach park with lawns and shade, good for snorkeling and picnics.

  4. Plaza de España (Hagåtña)

    A plaza and cathedral from the Spanish colonial era, a quick introduction to Guam's history.

  5. South coast drive

    A scenic loop past old villages, fort ruins and coastal lookouts. Allow half a day to a full day.

  6. Ritidian Beach

    A quiet, beautiful beach at the island's northern tip. It's a protected area with set opening hours and occasional closures, so check official information. Stay out of the water when waves are high.

  7. Chamorro night market

    A weekly night market in Hagåtña with local food and performances. Check the day and hours locally.

  8. Malls and outlets

    Tumon and Tamuning have malls and outlets. Guam has no sales tax, so the shelf price is often what you pay.

What to eat

Chamorro barbecue

Meat or chicken marinated in soy-based sauce and grilled over charcoal, served with red rice.

Red rice

Rice colored with achiote seeds, a staple at every Chamorro table.

Kelaguen

Chicken or shrimp tossed with lemon juice, coconut and chili for a tangy dish.

Finadene sauce

A Guam dipping sauce of soy, lemon, onion and chili, served with barbecue and rice.

American diners

Steaks, burgers and pancakes are everywhere. Portions are generous, so sharing is often enough.
