The dry season from April to October brings the most sunny days. The wet season runs November to March, with the heaviest rain around December to February. On Nyepi, the Balinese New Year (usually March, sometimes April), the whole island shuts down for a day and the airport closes for 24 hours, so check the date. Prices rise in July-August and during major holidays.
At the taxi counter in the arrivals area of Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS), tell them your destination and you get a fixed zone fare up front.
The fare is fixed in the app. At the airport you can only be picked up at designated pickup points, so follow the app and airport signs.
For Ubud or Nusa Dua, booking a hotel pickup in advance is easiest. Ubud can take 1.5 hours or more in traffic.
Book cars and motorbikes in the app. In some areas local transport groups restrict app pickups; if so, ask your hotel to arrange a car.
Blue metered taxis are easy to find in the southern tourist areas. Make sure the meter is on.
Hiring a car and driver by the day to visit temples, rice terraces and waterfalls is common. Confirm hours and what is included (fuel, parking) first.
Popular but traffic is chaotic and accidents are common. The Bali provincial government requires foreign tourists to hold a valid driving licence, obey traffic laws and rent only from licensed providers. Check official sources for which licences are recognized, and always wear a helmet.
Good for: First visit, close to the airport, value
Near the airport with lots of hotels, restaurants and malls. The beach is busy and the streets are noisy.
Good for: Restaurants, cafes, sunsets
A polished area of restaurants, boutiques and beach clubs. Traffic gets heavy in the evening.
Good for: Surfing, cafes, long stays
A young area with surf beaches and cafes. Sidewalks are narrow, so walking is less pleasant.
Good for: Rice fields, forests, culture, yoga
A hill town in the middle of the island, close to rice terraces, temples and traditional shows. The sea is far, so plan a separate beach day.
Good for: Resort stays, families
A quiet, tidy enclave of large resorts with relatively calm water. Fewer restaurants outside the resorts.
