Kagoshima Travel Guide

A city at Kyushu's southern tip, facing Sakurajima, a volcano island that still puffs smoke across the bay. With Ibusuki's sand baths, Kirishima's hot springs and black pork dishes, it is a great hot-spring and nature trip.

When to go

March-May and October-November are mild and clear — the best times. Summers are hot, and wind direction often brings volcanic ash onto the city. June to early July is the rainy season, and typhoons often pass in August-September, stopping ferries and flights. Winters are relatively mild.

Airport to the city

Airport limousine bus

Kagoshima Airport (KOJ) is in Kirishima, well north of the city. The limousine bus to Kagoshima-Chuo Station and Tenmonkan is easiest.

Time about 40-55 min to Kagoshima-Chuo StationCost about 1,300-1,500 JPY

Bus to Kirishima Onsen

A bus runs from the airport to the Kirishima hot-spring villages, handy if you start with a soak. Check times at the airport.

Time about 40-60 min to Kirishima Onsen depending on the stop (check official)Cost about 1,000 JPY

Rental car or taxi

A car makes it easy to reach spread-out Ibusuki, Kirishima and Chiran. Taxis to the city are expensive.

Time about 40 min to the cityCost taxi about 12,000 JPY+
