Ninh Binh Travel Guide

A province in northern Vietnam about 90 km south of Hanoi, where limestone peaks rise from rivers and rice fields. Its highlights are the Trang An Landscape Complex, recognized by UNESCO in 2014 as a mixed natural and cultural World Heritage site, and Hoa Lu, Vietnam's capital in the 10th-11th centuries. Perfect for slow travelers who enjoy rowing boats through caves and cycling country lanes.

When to go

Vietnam's tourism authority says March-May and September-November have the most pleasant temperatures. The rice around Tam Coc turns gold from late May to early June, and October brings harvest scenery too. July-August sees sudden downpours and storms, so keep your plans flexible.

Airport to the city

Airport bus 86 + train from Hanoi Railway Station

Take bus 86 from Noi Bai Airport to Hanoi Railway Station, then a North-South line train to Ninh Binh. According to Vietnam's tourism authority, several trains leave Hanoi for Ninh Binh daily.

Bus from Hanoi

Head into Hanoi from the airport and catch a bus to Ninh Binh. Vietnam's tourism authority notes regular daily buses from Hanoi.

Taxi or pre-booked car

Noi Bai taxis run from the first to the last flight every day, including holidays, and use meters. Ninh Binh is a long ride, so a pre-booked car is easiest with luggage or a late arrival.

Getting around

Rowing boats (sampans)

At Trang An and Tam Coc, a boat rower takes you along the rivers and through caves. Vietnam's tourism authority says trips take 2-3 hours, so bring water, snacks and a hat.

Bicycle

Ideal for the rice-field lanes and villages around Tam Coc, as Vietnam's tourism authority also suggests.

Taxi or motorbike tour

The easiest way to link spread-out sights like Hoa Lu, Bai Dinh Pagoda and Van Long. Confirm the price and route before you set off.

Electric carts carry visitors around the huge Bai Dinh Pagoda complex; check the fare on site.

Where to stay

Tam Coc

Good for: Rice-field views, cycling, homestays

A village surrounded by the Ngo Dong River, paddies and karst peaks, close to Mua Cave. Plenty of places to stay and eat, so it suits first-timers.

Around Trang An

Good for: UNESCO scenery, quiet stays

Near the Trang An boat wharf and named by Vietnam's tourism authority as a homestay area. Handy for an early boat trip.

Ninh Binh city center (near the station)

Good for: Transport links, local life

The easiest place to arrive by train or bus. You will need a taxi or motorbike to reach the sights.

Hoa Lu ancient capital area (Truong Yen)

Good for: History, a quieter atmosphere

The old capital area with the temples of King Dinh and King Le, about 20 minutes by car from Trang An. Good for a heritage-focused stay.

  1. Trang An Landscape Complex (UNESCO)

    A mixed natural and cultural World Heritage site since 2014, explored by boat through limestone caves and past temples. Route 1 visits 9 caves and 3 spiritual sites in 3+ hours; Route 2 visits 4 caves and 3 temples in about 3 hours. Check ticket prices at the official ticket office.

  2. Tam Coc

    Meaning 'three caves', it is a boat trip through three grottoes pierced by the Ngo Dong River. Check ticket and boat prices at the official ticket office.

  3. Bich Dong Pagoda

    A pagoda south of Tam Coc built on three levels of a mountainside. From the lower pagoda, 120 steps lead to the middle pagoda and 40 more to the upper one. Cover your shoulders and knees.

  4. Hang Mua (Mua Cave viewpoint)

    About 3.5 km from Tam Coc; climb about 500 steps (486 per the provincial tourism department) for sweeping views of paddies, rivers and peaks. Best at sunrise or dusk; check the fee on site.

  5. Hoa Lu Ancient Capital

    Vietnam's capital in the 10th-11th centuries until King Ly Thai To moved it to Thang Long (now Hanoi) in 1010. The temples of King Dinh and King Le, about 500 m apart, are the highlights; check the entry fee with the official site.

  6. Bai Dinh Pagoda

    Described by Vietnam's tourism authority as the country's largest complex of Buddhist temples. Expect about 300 steps up to the cave temples, and big crowds on Buddhist holidays.

  7. Van Long Wetland Nature Reserve

    At about 2,643 hectares, the largest wetland reserve in the Red River Delta. Quiet rowing-boat trips offer a chance to spot birds and the endangered Delacour's langur.

  8. Cuc Phuong National Park

    Over 22,000 hectares of forest about an hour from Ninh Binh city, with primate and reptile rescue centers and trees more than 1,000 years old. Allow half a day.

What to eat

Goat meat (de tai chanh)

Ninh Binh's signature dish, from goats raised on the limestone hills. Lightly cooked goat is tossed with lime juice, chili, ginger, lemongrass and sesame.

Com chay (crispy rice)

Fried rice crust, the province's emblematic snack, often enjoyed alongside goat dishes.

Nem chua Yen Mac

A tangy fermented pork roll from Yen Mac, listed among Ninh Binh's specialties.

Bun moc Kim Son

A noodle soup from Kim Son, highlighted by the provincial tourism department as a local specialty.

Banh cuon

Thin rice rolls filled with pork and mushrooms, eaten with mint and fish sauce — a breakfast favorite.

Lemongrass fish cakes and goat meatballs

A lunch suggested by Vietnam's tourism authority near Tam Coc, best with stir-fried greens.

Sample itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Noi Bai Airport to Hanoi, then train or bus to Ninh Binh. Check in at Tam Coc and climb Hang Mua at dusk for the valley views.

  2. Day 2

    Early boat route at Trang An (about 3 hours), goat and com chay for lunch, then the King Dinh and King Le temples at Hoa Lu.

  3. Day 3

    Bai Dinh Pagoda in the morning, then a Van Long boat trip or Tam Coc and Bich Dong Pagoda, and head back to Hanoi or the airport with time to spare.
