When to go

To include Changbai Mountain (Baekdusan), summer to early autumn is best. Heaven Lake is frozen for about seven months and thaws in early summer, and the South Slope usually opens only in the summer season. Winters are long and very cold (freezing period November-March), so avoid them unless snow is the goal. National Day week (around October 1) and the summer peak are very crowded.

Top sights

  1. Yanbian University street

The building facing the university's main gate is famous as a 'viral wall' packed with signs and lights. Photos are best after dark when it lights up.

  2. China Korean Folk Village

A folk village showcasing traditional ethnic Korean life, which also buzzes in the evening as a night culture and food street. Check official information for hours and fees.

  3. Mao'ershan National Forest Park

A forest park about 10 km south of the city. A Yanji landmark with views over the city and the Burhatong and Hailan rivers.

  4. Water Market

A riverside market selling ethnic Korean foods such as kimchi and pickles, rice sausage, pounded rice cake and rice wine. You will also find locally grown produce.

  5. West Market

One of Yanji's longest-running commercial hubs, part of local life for generations. Good for browsing food and everyday goods.

  6. Burhatong River

The river running through the city, with its banks landscaped as a water scenic area. Nice for an evening stroll.

  7. Changbai Mountain (Baekdusan) North Slope

The best-equipped route: scenic-area shuttles take you up to Heaven Lake, a large waterfall, hot-spring areas, Green Abyss Pool and the Underground Forest. Mountain weather changes fast, so Heaven Lake is only visible on clear days and never guaranteed. Check tickets and shuttles officially.

  8. Changbai Mountain (Baekdusan) West and South Slopes

The West Slope means climbing 1,442 steps for a wide, level view of Heaven Lake, plus the Jinjiang Grand Canyon and alpine flower gardens (July-August). The South Slope is closest to the lake and has the Yalu River Grand Canyon, but usually opens only in summer and may close temporarily for weather or road repairs. In winter the West Slope summit road and steps can close due to snow; check operations and fees officially.
