When to go

Summer, June to August, is the best time to visit. The national Naadam festival is usually held around July 11-13, when flights and rooms fill up, so book early. From November to March temperatures stay below freezing and winter nights can drop below -40°C, and air pollution from heating can be heavy in winter.

Airport to the city

Airport public bus

Chinggis Khaan International Airport (UBN) is about 50 km south of the city. According to the airport, public buses run to the city 24 hours a day; buy tickets at the self-service kiosk on the west side of the terminal's first floor or at the bus and taxi counter. Check routes, timetables and fares officially.

Getting around

Taxis & call taxis

Korea's embassy in Mongolia advises using call taxis rather than cars flagged on the street to avoid fare disputes and crime. Agree the destination and a rough fare before you get in, and carry small notes.

Ride-hailing apps

Booking a car in an app shows the fare upfront, so there's less haggling. Check locally which apps work and how to pay.

City buses (transport card)

City bus fares are paid with transport cards such as U-money and Ubcard. Pickpocketing on buses has been reported, so keep your bag in front of you.

Walking

The centre around Sukhbaatar Square and Peace Avenue is walkable. Avoid walking alone late at night and stay with companions.

Car hire & tour vehicles

Sights outside the city, such as Terelj National Park and the Chinggis Khaan Statue, are usually reached by hired car or tour vehicle. City traffic can be slow, so allow extra time.

Where to stay

Around Sukhbaatar Square (centre)

Good for: First visit, sights and restaurants

The heart of the city with Government House, museums and theatres, so the main sights are walkable. The airport night bus also runs to the square.

Peace Avenue

Good for: Shopping, public transport

The main east-west avenue, lined with department stores and restaurants and served by frequent buses. It gets crowded, so watch for pickpockets.

Zaisan area (south of the centre)

Good for: Quieter stays, views

The southern area around the Zaisan Memorial is calmer than the centre. You'll need a car to get downtown.

Ger camps in Terelj National Park

Good for: Steppe experience, one-night trip

Spend a night in a ger inside the national park, about an hour's drive from the city, for horse riding and stargazing. Check facilities and heating before booking.
