The hub of the Kansai region is famous for its food culture and friendly, outgoing locals. Universal Studios Japan makes it great for families, and Kyoto, Nara and Kobe are a short train ride away, so it works well as a base for the whole Kansai region.

Late March to early April (cherry blossoms) and October-November are ideal. Avoid the rainy season from mid-June to July, the hot and humid July-August, and typhoon season in August-September; Golden Week (late April to early May) and New Year are crowded and pricey.

Runs to Tennoji, Shin-Osaka and Kyoto. Handy for shinkansen connections or heading straight to Kyoto.

Hankyu, Keihan, Kintetsu and JR lines reach them in 30-60 minutes. Check which station (Umeda, Namba, etc.) your line leaves from.
Good for: First visit, food and nightlife
Right by Dotonbori and the shopping streets, with Nankai trains to Kansai Airport. It stays loud late, so pick a hotel a block or two away if you want quiet.
Good for: Transport hub, Kyoto and Kobe trips
JR, Hankyu, Hanshin and the subway all meet here, ideal for day trips. The underground malls are a maze, so check your exit.
Good for: Shinkansen travel
Convenient for bullet trains to Tokyo or Hiroshima, with many business hotels. Little to see nearby.
Good for: Value, airport access
The Haruka stops here and hotels are relatively cheap. Close to Shinsekai and the Abeno Harukas observatory.
Good for: USJ-focused family trips

The main keep houses a paid history museum, while the surrounding park is free to explore. Especially beautiful in cherry blossom and autumn foliage season.
Osaka's icon, with the Glico running man sign, giant 3D signboards and food stalls. Go in the evening when the lights are on.
Super Nintendo World and the Harry Potter area are the big draws. Tickets are date-specific, so buy ahead; Express Passes to skip lines sell out early in peak season.
A traditional market for seafood, fruit and wagyu skewers eaten on the spot. Liveliest from morning to early afternoon, with tourist-level prices.
An open-air rooftop deck linking two towers with sweeping city views. Go around sunset to see both day and night views (paid).

A retro neighborhood packed with kushikatsu restaurants. The paid Tsutenkaku tower gives a view over the streets.

A huge aquarium famous for its whale sharks, great with kids. Weekend afternoons are busy; mornings or evenings are calmer.
Free-roaming deer and the Great Buddha of Todai-ji. About 40 minutes from Namba on the Kintetsu Line; deer crowd you if you hold deer crackers.
Octopus-filled batter balls, Osaka's signature street food. About 500-800 yen for 6-8; the inside is very hot, so let them cool.
A savory cabbage-and-batter pancake with meat or seafood, often cooked at your table. About 1,000-1,800 yen.
Deep-fried skewers of meat and vegetables, born in Shinsekai. The shared sauce pot has a strict no-double-dipping rule; use a cabbage leaf to add more.
Udon topped with sweet simmered fried tofu, said to originate in Osaka. About 500-1,000 yen a bowl.
Sea urchin, tuna and grilled scallops around Kuromon Market. Conveyor-belt sushi runs about 150-500 yen a plate.
