Osaka's airport: Kansai Airport (KIX)

Our Osaka guide explains getting into the city from Kansai Airport (KIX). When you search for or book flights, first check that the arrival airport on your ticket is Kansai Airport (KIX).

The main ways from Kansai Airport into Osaka are the Nankai Airport Line (Rapi:t / Airport Express), the JR Limited Express Haruka, the JR Kansai Airport Rapid and the Airport Limousine Bus. Which one fits depends on whether you are staying in Namba, Umeda, Tennoji or Shin-Osaka.

Going from the airport straight to Kyoto or Nara has its own article, so this one covers only the trip to hotels in Osaka. All times and fares below are approximate figures from our guide.

To Namba / Shinsaibashi: Nankai Airport Line (Rapi:t / Airport Express)

The Nankai Airport Line runs from Kansai Airport to Namba without changing trains. It takes about 35-50 minutes. The Rapi:t limited express has reserved seats; the Airport Express is cheaper.

Our guide has no exact fares, so check official fares. Just remember that the Rapi:t adds a limited express charge to the base fare.

Namba / Shinsaibashi is right by Dotonbori and the shopping streets, and suits a first visit, food and nightlife. It stays loud late, so pick a hotel a block or two away if you want quiet. On your way home, the Nankai trains to Kansai Airport also leave from Namba.

To Umeda (Osaka Station): JR Kansai Airport Rapid or limousine bus

The JR Kansai Airport Rapid is slower than the Haruka but has no limited-express surcharge, and runs to Tennoji and Osaka Station (Umeda). It takes about 50-70 minutes; check official fares.

The Airport Limousine Bus stops at major hotels in Umeda, Namba and more. It takes about 50-70 minutes and costs about 1,400-2,000 yen, depending on the stop. It is easy with luggage, but slower in traffic.

In Umeda, JR, Hankyu, Hanshin and the subway all meet, making it the transport hub for day trips to Kyoto and Kobe. The Umeda Sky Building Floating Garden is in this area too. The underground malls are a maze, so check the exit for your hotel in advance.

To Tennoji / Shin-Osaka: JR Limited Express Haruka

The JR Limited Express Haruka runs from Kansai Airport to Tennoji and Shin-Osaka in one ride. It takes about 30-50 minutes and costs about 1,800-2,500 yen for non-reserved seats; discounted tickets for foreign visitors exist.

Tennoji is where the Haruka stops and hotels are relatively cheap, so it combines value with airport access. It is close to Shinsekai / Tsutenkaku and the Abeno Harukas observatory, and the JR Kansai Airport Rapid stops here too.

Shin-Osaka is convenient for bullet trains to Tokyo or Hiroshima and has many business hotels, though there is little to see nearby. The Haruka also runs on to Kyoto; for going from the airport straight to Kyoto, see our separate article.

Which option suits which area

The easiest way to choose your airport transport is by where you are staying. Here is how the areas in our guide connect with the airport options.

Once in the city, the Osaka Metro Midosuji Line, the red north-south line linking Umeda, Shinsaibashi, Namba and Tennoji, is the backbone of most itineraries. If the station where you leave the airport train is not near your hotel, you can continue on the Midosuji Line.

At a glance

Check that the airport on your ticket is Kansai Airport (KIX), then choose by the area you are staying in. All times and fares below are approximate.

Arrival-day checklist and your departure day

Get an ICOCA card before you board the airport train. It is the Kansai transit card for subways, JR, buses and convenience stores, and Suica and PASMO from Tokyo work here too.

On your departure day, Kansai Airport departure halls get busy, so arrive 2-3 hours before international flights. From Namba you can take the Nankai line, and from Tennoji or Shin-Osaka the Haruka, to the airport without changing trains.
