Osaka in 4 Days: Day-by-Day Route from Kansai Airport
From Kansai Airport to your hotel area, then USJ, a Kyoto or Nara day trip and the run back: Osaka day by day.

Published
The big picture: pick your base first
Four days suits Osaka well, and five works if you want more time for Kyoto or Nara. This plan covers arrival day, a full day at Universal Studios Japan, a day trip, and a final day of markets and Shinsekai before heading back to the airport.
Choosing your hotel area first makes arrival day much easier. Namba / Shinsaibashi suits a first visit focused on food and nightlife; Umeda (Osaka Station) is best for frequent day trips to Kyoto and Kobe; Tennoji offers value and easy airport access; Shin-Osaka is for shinkansen travel; and the Bay Area (Universal City) suits USJ-focused family trips.
The red Osaka Metro Midosuji Line, running north-south through Umeda, Shinsaibashi, Namba and Tennoji, is the backbone of most itineraries. Staying near it keeps all four days simple.
Day 1: Kansai Airport to your hotel area
There are four main ways into the city: the Nankai Airport Line, the JR Limited Express Haruka, the JR Kansai Airport Rapid and the Airport Limousine Bus. The best choice depends on where you stay.
The Nankai Airport Line runs direct to Namba. The Rapi:t limited express has reserved seats and adds a limited express charge; the Airport Express is cheaper. The Haruka runs to Tennoji, Shin-Osaka and Kyoto, while the JR Kansai Airport Rapid is slower but has no limited-express surcharge and reaches Tennoji and Osaka Station (Umeda). The limousine bus stops at major hotels in Umeda, Namba and more; it is easy with luggage but slower in traffic.
- Staying in Namba / Shinsaibashi: Nankai Airport Line (Rapi:t or Airport Express), about 35-50 min; check official fares
- Staying in Umeda (Osaka Station): JR Kansai Airport Rapid, about 50-70 min (check official fares), or the limousine bus, about 50-70 min and about 1,400-2,000 yen depending on the stop
- Staying in Tennoji: JR Haruka, about 30-50 min and about 1,800-2,500 yen for non-reserved seats (discounted tickets for foreign visitors exist), or the JR Kansai Airport Rapid
- Staying in Shin-Osaka: JR Haruka, about 30-50 min, also handy for shinkansen connections
- Staying in the Bay Area (Universal City): check the official source for routes and fares from the airport
Day 1 afternoon and evening: keep it light
If you land in the morning, walk Osaka Castle and its park. The main keep houses a paid history museum, while the surrounding park is free. The JR Osaka Loop Line links Osaka Castle Park with Osaka Station and Tennoji. Spend the afternoon in Umeda, then head up the Umeda Sky Building Floating Garden (paid) around sunset to see both day and night views.
If you arrive late in the day, just head to Dotonbori in the evening. Its giant 3D signboards and food stalls look best once the lights are on. Takoyaki costs about 500-800 yen for 6-8 pieces; the inside is very hot, so let them cool.
Ignore touts around Dotonbori and Minami, as overcharging scams do happen. Namba / Shinsaibashi stays loud late, so pick a hotel a block or two away if you want quiet.

Day 2: a full day at Universal Studios Japan
The guide's plan gives day two entirely to Universal Studios Japan. Tickets are date-specific, so buy ahead, and Express Passes to skip lines sell out early in peak season. Buy both on the official site once your dates are set.
For early entry, Bay Area (Universal City) hotels sit at the park gates. They are farther from the city sights, though, so they make most sense for USJ-focused family trips rather than a whole stay.
In the evening, head back to Dotonbori for takoyaki or okonomiyaki (about 1,000-1,800 yen). If you already saw Dotonbori on day one, an easy night near your hotel is fine too.
Day 3: Kyoto or Nara day trip
Hankyu, Keihan, Kintetsu and JR lines reach Kyoto, Nara and Kobe in 30-60 minutes. Each line leaves from a different station (Umeda, Namba, etc.), so check the night before. This is the day when a Umeda or Namba base pays off most.
For Nara, it is about 40 minutes from Namba on the Kintetsu Line. Nara Park has free-roaming deer and the Great Buddha of Todai-ji; deer crowd you if you hold deer crackers. For Kyoto, check the departure station and line in the official information before you set off.
Come back to Osaka for Shinsaibashi shopping in the evening. With kids, Kaiyukan Aquarium and its whale sharks is an alternative; weekend afternoons are busy, so mornings or evenings are calmer.

Day 4: Kuromon Market, Shinsekai, then Namba to the airport
Start the last day at Kuromon Market with seafood, fruit and wagyu skewers eaten on the spot. It is liveliest from morning to early afternoon, with tourist-level prices. Markets and small eateries may be cash only, so keep some yen.
In the afternoon, go to retro Shinsekai for kushikatsu and the paid Tsutenkaku tower view. The shared sauce pot has a strict no-double-dipping rule; use a cabbage leaf to add more sauce.
The guide's route heads to the airport from Namba on the Nankai Airport Line; from Tennoji you can take JR instead. Kansai Airport departure halls get busy, so work backwards to arrive 2-3 hours before an international flight.

Before you go: transit cards, budget and tax-free
The ICOCA card covers subways, JR, buses and convenience stores, and Suica and PASMO from Tokyo work too. The Osaka Amazing Pass includes free entry to many attractions, but transport and covered sights differ by pass type, so check the official details before buying. In Osaka, stand on the right of escalators and leave the left clear.
Per person per day, budget about 7,000-9,000 yen on a tight budget, about 17,000-22,000 yen with a business hotel and restaurant meals, and about 45,000 yen or more with a luxury hotel and USJ Express Pass. From November 1, 2026, tax-free shopping switches to a refund system: you pay the tax at purchase and get it refunded after customs checks your goods at departure. Check official information for the procedure.
- Best seasons: late March to early April (cherry blossoms) and October-November
- Best avoided: rainy season mid-June to July, the hot July-August, typhoon season August-September
- Golden Week (late April to early May) and New Year are crowded and pricey
- Check entry requirements with official sources before you travel
