What to know first
All three have direct routes from Incheon and Busan (Gimhae); from Busan to Tokyo, look for flights into Narita. Straight-line distances from Incheon are about 560 km to Fukuoka, 860 km to Osaka (Kansai), and 1,210 km (Haneda) or 1,260 km (Narita) to Tokyo. Days and frequencies can change by season, so check the airlines' official information and the route pages below.
The best seasons are similar: late March to early April (cherry blossoms) and October-November. The rainy season (June-July), the hot July-August and typhoon season (August-September) are best avoided, and Golden Week (late April to early May) and New Year are crowded and pricey.
Tokyo — a vast city with the most to see
Skyscraper districts, quiet shrines and tiny alley bars sit side by side, and every neighborhood feels different — shopping, food, anime or traditional culture will fill your days quickly.
Tokyo has two airports. Haneda is about 15-20 minutes from the city by train; Narita is about 40-90 minutes by airport express. Check the arrival airport when choosing flights.
Trip length: 4 to 5 days. Best for: travelers who want to see a lot, and fans of shopping and pop culture.

Osaka — food and Kansai day trips
Famous for its food culture and friendly locals. A big theme park makes it great for families, and Kyoto, Nara and Kobe are a short train ride away, so it works well as a base for the Kansai region.
Kansai Airport to Namba takes about 35-50 minutes by train.
Trip length: 4 days, or 5 with day trips to Kyoto or Nara. Best for: food lovers, travelers who want to see several cities, and families with children.

Fukuoka — close and quick, perfect for a weekend
One of the closest big cities to Korea, with Hakata about 5 minutes from the airport by subway (add a free 10-15 minute shuttle to the domestic terminal if you land at the international terminal). Tonkotsu ramen, motsunabe hot pot and yatai food stalls are the highlights.
Day trips to Dazaifu and the Yufuin and Beppu hot springs are easy. Typhoons often pass through Kyushu in August-September, so allow for possible cancellations.
Trip length: 3 days, or 4 with a Yufuin or Beppu day trip. Best for: short breaks and weekends, and anyone who wants minimal travel time.

Check before you go
Japan's entry requirements and procedures can change, so check official government sources before you travel.
- In Tokyo, choose your hotel area to match your arrival airport (Haneda or Narita)
- Compare flights and hotels early for cherry blossom season, Golden Week and New Year
- In typhoon season (August-September), watch airline alerts and leave slack in your plans
