Fukuoka Travel Guide

Kyushu's largest city is a short flight from Korea, and its airport is just minutes from downtown by subway. It is known for tonkotsu ramen, motsunabe hot pot and open-air yatai food stalls, and makes an easy base for day trips to Dazaifu and the Yufuin and Beppu hot springs.

Emergency numbers

When to go

Late March to early April (cherry blossoms) and October-November are ideal. The rainy season from mid-June to July and the hot July-August are tough, and typhoons often pass through Kyushu in August-September, so allow for possible flight cancellations. Golden Week and New Year are busy.

Airport to the city

Subway Kuko Line (domestic terminal station)

Two stops from Fukuoka Airport to Hakata and straight through to Tenjin. If you arrive at the international terminal, take the free shuttle bus to the domestic terminal first.

Time about 5 min to Hakata, about 11 min to Tenjin (plus a 10-15 min shuttle)Cost about 260-310 yen

International terminal to Hakata Station bus

A local bus runs from outside the international terminal directly to Hakata Station (Chikushi exit). Handy with luggage.

Time about 15-20 minCost about 400 yen

Taxi

The airport is so close to the city that taxis are relatively affordable, especially split among three or four people.

Time about 15-20 min to HakataCost about 1,500-2,500 yen

Getting around

IC cards (hayakaken, Suica, ICOCA)

Fukuoka's own hayakaken card works on subways, buses and in convenience stores, and so do Suica and ICOCA.

Subway Kuko Line

Connects the airport, Hakata, Nakasu-Kawabata and Tenjin, which covers most visitor itineraries.

Nishitetsu buses

Useful for reaching Fukuoka Tower and Momochi Beach. Many buses are boarded at the rear and paid at the front when you get off.

Nishitetsu trains

Run from Tenjin (Nishitetsu Fukuoka Station) to Dazaifu and Yanagawa. They use different stations from JR, so check where you depart.

Walking

Hakata, Nakasu and Tenjin are 20-30 minutes apart on foot, with a pleasant riverside walk in between.

Where to stay

Hakata Station area

Good for: First visit, transport hub

The airport subway, shinkansen and highway buses all meet here, ideal for day trips. The station complex is full of restaurants and shops.

Tenjin

Good for: Shopping and dining

Department stores and a huge underground mall, plus the Nishitetsu train terminal. Lively in the evenings.

Nakasu / Gion

Good for: Yatai stalls, between Hakata and Tenjin

Close to the riverside food stalls and Canal City, within walking distance of both main districts. Parts of Nakasu are a nightlife zone, so ignore touts at night.

Momochi seaside

Good for: Sea views, a slower pace

The waterfront with Fukuoka Tower and an artificial beach. About 20-30 minutes by bus from the center.

Ohori Park area

Good for: Quiet stay, walks

A calm residential area beside a large lake park, a few subway stops from Tenjin.
