Fukuoka Airport (FUK) to Hakata and Tenjin by Subway Kuko Line, bus or taxi: times, fares, the international terminal shuttle and how to reach each hotel area.
Published · Updated
Fukuoka Airport (FUK) sits very close to the city
Your Fukuoka trip starts at Fukuoka Airport (FUK). When you book, check that the arrival airport on your ticket is Fukuoka Airport (FUK). The airport is very close to the city, so the trip to Hakata or Tenjin is short.
One thing to know: the international terminal is separate from the domestic terminal, which has the subway station. If you arrive on an international flight, you either take the free shuttle bus to the domestic terminal and ride the subway, or take the bus to Hakata Station from outside the international terminal.
There are three ways into the city: the Subway Kuko Line, the bus from the international terminal to Hakata Station, and taxis. Below we cover times and fares for each, how to reach each hotel area, and how to continue to places like Dazaifu and Momochi Beach. All times and fares are approximate, so check official transport information again.
Subway Kuko Line: domestic terminal station to Hakata and Tenjin
The Subway Kuko Line starts at the domestic terminal station. Hakata is two stops away, about 5 minutes, and Tenjin is about 11 minutes with no change. The fare is about 260-310 yen.
If you arrive at the international terminal, first take the free shuttle bus to the domestic terminal. Allow an extra 10-15 minutes for the shuttle on top of the subway ride.
The Kuko Line connects the airport, Hakata, Nakasu-Kawabata and Tenjin, which covers most visitor itineraries. Fukuoka's own hayakaken card works on subways, buses and in convenience stores, and so do Suica and ICOCA. Check first and last train times in the official information before you fly.
International terminal to Hakata Station bus, and taxis
A local bus runs from outside the international terminal to Hakata Station (Chikushi exit) with no change. It takes about 15-20 minutes and costs about 400 yen. It is handy with luggage, when switching between the shuttle and the subway would be a hassle.
A taxi to Hakata takes about 15-20 minutes and costs about 1,500-2,500 yen. The airport is so close to the city that taxis are relatively affordable, especially split among three or four people.
Check bus stop locations and operating hours in the airport or bus operator's official information. For a taxi, save your hotel name and address on your phone so you can show the driver.
Getting to each hotel area
The best option depends on where you stay. Here are the main hotel areas and how to reach each from the airport. Hakata, Nakasu and Tenjin are 20-30 minutes apart on foot, with a pleasant riverside walk in between.

- Hakata Station area (first visit, transport hub): the airport subway, shinkansen and highway buses all meet here. About 5 minutes by subway from the domestic terminal station, or about 15-20 minutes by bus from the international terminal
- Tenjin (shopping and dining): about 11 minutes on the Kuko Line with no change. Department stores, a huge underground mall and the Nishitetsu train terminal
- Nakasu / Gion (yatai stalls, between Hakata and Tenjin): the Kuko Line stops at Nakasu-Kawabata. Both main districts are within walking distance; parts of Nakasu are a nightlife zone, so ignore touts at night
- Ohori Park area (quiet stay, walks): a calm residential area beside a large lake park, a few Kuko Line stops from Tenjin
- Momochi seaside (sea views, a slower pace): the waterfront with Fukuoka Tower and an artificial beach, about 20-30 minutes by bus from the center
Beyond Hakata and Tenjin: Momochi Beach and Dazaifu
Nishitetsu buses are useful for Fukuoka Tower and Momochi Beach, about 20-30 minutes by bus from the center. Many buses are boarded at the rear and paid at the front when you get off, so have your IC card ready.
For Dazaifu and Yanagawa, take Nishitetsu trains from Tenjin (Nishitetsu Fukuoka Station). They use different stations and lines from JR, so check where you depart. Coming from the airport, ride the Kuko Line to Tenjin and walk on to Nishitetsu Fukuoka Station.
The Hakata Station area is where the shinkansen and highway buses meet, which makes day trips easy. If you plan several side trips, keep that in mind when choosing where to stay.
