When to go

Kazakhstan's official tourism portal presents Almaty as a year-round destination and highlights autumn, with its colourful leaves, as a lovely season for evening walks. Spring brings the Nauryz holiday (check official dates), and in winter you can ski at Shymbulak. Ski seasons and cable car operating periods change every year, so check officially.

Airport to the city

City bus

According to Almaty International Airport (ALA), the bus stop is right in front of the terminal as you leave the arrivals hall. The city has said route 92 links the airport and the city, but routes, timetables and fares can change, so check officially.

Official airport taxi

Use the official taxi counter or the official taxi rank. Korea's consulate in Almaty warns that unlicensed private drivers touting at the airport sometimes charge excessive fares.

Getting around

Almaty Metro

The city's underground line runs from 6:20 am to midnight, according to the operator. A ride costs about KZT 120, paid with a smart token, an Onay transport card, or a bank card (Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay) at station terminals.

City buses (Onay card)

Almaty's buses use the Onay transport card system, and the Onay app shows bus locations. Watch out for pickpockets on public transport.

Taxis & ride-hailing apps

Official taxis or ride-hailing apps help avoid fare disputes compared with cars flagged on the street. Check locally which apps work and how to pay.

Walking

Arbat (the Zhibek Zholy pedestrian street), Panfilov Park and the Green Bazaar are close together and easy to explore on foot.

Car hire & tour vehicles

Nature sights outside the city, such as Big Almaty Lake and Charyn Canyon, are usually reached by hired car or tour vehicle. Mountain roads can be affected by weather, so check before you set off.

Where to stay

Arbat & Panfilov Park (centre)

Good for: First visit, sightseeing on foot

The Zhibek Zholy pedestrian street, Panfilov Park and the Green Bazaar are close together, so the main sights are walkable, with metro stations such as Zhibek Zholy nearby.

Abai station & Dostyk Avenue

Good for: Kok Tobe access, public transport

The lower cable car station for Kok Tobe is on Dostyk Avenue, near Abai metro station. Handy for both the centre and the mountains.

Foothills towards Medeu

Good for: Mountain views, ski or hiking trips

On the way to Medeu and Shymbulak, so transfers are short if your plans focus on the mountains. There are fewer restaurants and transport options than in the centre.

  7. Big Almaty Lake

A mountain lake in Ile-Alatau National Park whose colour changes with the season and weather. It supplies the city's drinking water, so swimming is forbidden; check park entry conditions officially.

  8. Charyn Canyon

A canyon in Charyn National Park about 200 km east of Almaty, famous for the castle-like rocks of the Valley of Castles. Plan a full day and check entry conditions officially.
