How many days does Almaty need? 4 to 5
Almaty is a city in southeastern Kazakhstan, set beneath the Ile Alatau range of the Tian Shan. You can walk the centre around Panfilov Park, Zenkov Cathedral and the Green Bazaar, then head out to Medeu and Shymbulak, Big Almaty Lake or Charyn Canyon for mountains and nature.
The guide suggests 4 to 5 days, including a day trip. That means two days in town, one in the mountains and one out of the city. Flying home the day after your day trip keeps things relaxed.
- Day 1: airport to the city and check in → stroll Arbat (Zhibek Zholy Street) → beshbarmak or lagman for dinner
- Day 2: Panfilov Park and Zenkov Cathedral → Green Bazaar for browsing and lunch → Central State Museum → Kok Tobe at sunset
- Day 3: Medeu skating rink → cable car to Shymbulak → back in town by late afternoon
- Day 4: day trip to Charyn Canyon, or half a day at Big Almaty Lake
Airport to the city: bus 92 or an official taxi
According to Almaty International Airport (ALA), the bus stop is right in front of the terminal as you leave the arrivals hall. The city has said route 92 links the airport and the city, but routes, timetables and fares can change, so check officially.
For a taxi, use the official taxi counter or the official taxi rank. Korea's consulate in Almaty warns that unlicensed private drivers touting at the airport sometimes charge excessive fares. A ride-hailing app is another option. Check taxi fares and journey times officially.
The currency is the tenge (KZT). Carry some small notes for markets and small shops. Flight options, including connecting flights, vary, so check with the airline whether and when flights operate.
- Bus: stop in front of the arrivals hall, route 92 (check routes, timetables and fares officially)
- Taxi: official taxi counter or rank; check fares officially
- Avoid unlicensed drivers touting at the airport
Getting around: metro, Onay buses, taxi apps and walking
The Almaty Metro runs from 6:20 am to midnight, according to the operator. A ride costs about KZT 120, paid with a smart token, an Onay transport card, or a bank card (Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay) at station terminals.
City buses use the Onay transport card system, and the Onay app shows bus locations. Korea's embassy in Kazakhstan advises special care against pickpockets on buses and other public transport. Wear your bag in front and don't walk around with your phone in hand.
Official taxis or ride-hailing apps help avoid fare disputes compared with cars flagged on the street. Check locally which apps work and how to pay. Arbat, Panfilov Park and the Green Bazaar are close together and easy to explore on foot.
- Metro: 6:20 am to midnight, about KZT 120 per ride
- Metro payment: smart token, Onay transport card, bank card (station terminals)
- Buses: Onay transport card; bus locations in the Onay app
- Taxis: official taxis or ride-hailing apps
Two days in town: from Arbat to Kok Tobe
On your first day, walk Arbat (Zhibek Zholy Street), the pedestrian street in the centre. The official tourism portal suggests starting here and walking on to the Green Bazaar. Staying around Arbat and Panfilov Park puts the main sights within walking distance, with metro stations such as Zhibek Zholy nearby.
On the second morning, visit Zenkov Cathedral in the Park of 28 Panfilov Guardsmen. This Russian Orthodox Ascension Cathedral opened in 1907 and is known for being built of wood almost without nails. Then browse the Green Bazaar, more than a hundred years old, for local food and lunch. It's busy, so watch your belongings.
In the afternoon, see the golden hall and the galleries on ancient and medieval Kazakh history at the Central State Museum (check opening hours officially). Around sunset, take the cable car from the lower station on Dostyk Avenue up to Kok Tobe, at about 1,100 m, for views over the city.

- Arbat → Green Bazaar: walking route suggested by the official tourism portal
- Zenkov Cathedral: 1907, wooden, built almost without nails
- Kok Tobe: about 1,100 m, best around sunset
- Food to try: beshbarmak, lagman, baursak, samsa
Mountains and day trips: Medeu and Shymbulak, Big Almaty Lake, Charyn Canyon
Medeu is a high-altitude outdoor skating rink at 1,691 m, and a cable car climbs from there to Shymbulak mountain resort at about 2,260 m. It's about 30 minutes from the centre. Check cable car hours and fares officially, and check again the day before whether they are running.
Big Almaty Lake is a mountain lake in Ile-Alatau National Park whose colour changes with the season and weather. It supplies the city's drinking water, so swimming is forbidden. Charyn Canyon, about 200 km east of Almaty, is famous for the Valley of Castles; plan a full day. Both are usually reached by hired car or tour vehicle; check entry conditions officially.
The mountains are much higher than the city and the weather changes quickly. Bring a jacket even in summer, and since mountain roads can be affected by weather, check before you set off.

- Medeu 1,691 m → cable car → Shymbulak about 2,260 m (about 30 minutes from the centre)
- Big Almaty Lake: no swimming; check park entry conditions officially
- Charyn Canyon: about 200 km east, a full-day trip
When to go? Year-round, with autumn a highlight
Kazakhstan's official tourism portal presents Almaty as a year-round destination and highlights autumn, with its colourful leaves, as a lovely season for evening walks. Spring brings the Nauryz holiday (check official dates), and in winter you can ski at Shymbulak. Ski seasons and cable car operating periods change every year, so check officially.
On average, October has a high of 17°C, a low of 5°C and 50 mm of rain. These are the 1991–2020 normals for Almaty station (Almaty OGMS) from Kazhydromet's submission to the WMO normals collection (NOAA NCEI). Check the official forecast before you go for this year's weather.
