Sendai Travel Guide

The largest city in Tohoku, nicknamed the 'City of Trees' for its zelkova-lined avenues. Explore Date Masamune's castle site and mausoleum, the famous bay views of Matsushima and nearby hot-spring villages, and try local food like gyutan (grilled beef tongue) and zunda mochi.

When to go

Spring cherry blossoms and cool autumn with its foliage are the best times to explore. From August 6 to 8, the Sendai Tanabata Festival fills downtown with decorations, but rooms book up fast. Winter brings illuminations along Jozenji-dori, while the surrounding mountains get snow and cold.

Airport to the city

Sendai Airport Access Line (train)

Trains run from Sendai Airport Station straight to JR Sendai Station with no transfer — the fastest and most popular option. IC cards such as icsca and Suica are accepted.

Taxi

An option if you have lots of luggage or arrive late. It takes longer than the train to reach downtown.

Getting around

Subway

Two lines: the north-south Namboku Line and the east-west Tozai Line, meeting at Sendai Station. icsca and national IC cards such as Suica are accepted.

Loople Sendai sightseeing bus

A loop bus from the Sendai Station West Exit bus terminal to the Sendai Castle site, Zuihoden, Osaki Hachimangu and more; a full loop takes about 70 minutes. One-day passes, including a combined subway pass, are available; check official information for fares.

JR trains

The Senseki Line goes to Matsushima and the Senzan Line to Sakunami Onsen and Yamadera. The Tohoku Shinkansen links Sendai with Tokyo and beyond.

Rental car

Handy for hot-spring villages and coastal drives. Japan drives on the left, and you need an International Driving Permit.

Where to stay

Around Sendai Station

Good for: Transport, first visit

Where the airport line, Shinkansen, subway and Loople bus all meet. Best base for day trips.

Ichibancho and Kokubuncho

Good for: Dining, shopping, nightlife

Covered shopping arcades, restaurants and bars, within walking distance of Sendai Station.

Around Jozenji-dori

Good for: Strolls, winter illuminations

An avenue lined with zelkova trees for about 700 m, with a promenade down the middle and a tunnel of lights in winter.

Akiu Onsen

Good for: Hot-spring ryokan, quiet rest

A hot-spring village known as Sendai's retreat, about 50 minutes by bus from Sendai Station.

Matsushima

Good for: Bay views, day trip or overnight

One of Japan's Three Scenic Views, with islands dotting the bay. About 40 minutes from Sendai Station on the JR Senseki Line.

  1. Sendai Castle site (Aoba Castle)

    The site of Date Masamune's castle, now a park with his famous equestrian statue and views over the city toward the sea. Check official information for exhibit hours and fees.

  2. Zuihoden

    Date Masamune's mausoleum in ornate Momoyama style, rebuilt after the war. About a 5-minute walk from the Loople bus stop. Check official information for fees.

  3. Osaki Hachimangu

    A shrine founded by Date Masamune; its black-lacquer and gold-leaf main building is a National Treasure. Reachable by Loople bus.

  4. Jozenji-dori

    A zelkova-lined avenue symbolizing the 'City of Trees', with sculptures along its promenade. Check official information for winter illumination dates.

  5. Matsushima (day trip)

    One of Japan's Three Scenic Views, with about 260 islands. Visit Zuiganji temple, linked to the Date clan, and Godaido hall on a tiny island, then take a sightseeing cruise. Check official information for schedules and fares.

  6. Akiu and Sakunami Onsen (day trip)

    Two hot-spring villages close to the city. Akiu is about 50 minutes by bus from Sendai Station; for Sakunami, take the JR Senzan Line about 40 minutes and change to a bus.

  7. Yamadera (Risshakuji, day trip)

    A mountainside temple in Yamagata Prefecture reached by more than 1,000 stone steps, with sweeping views at the top. About 1 hour 10 minutes from Sendai Station on the JR Senzan Line, then about a 10-minute walk. Allow around 1.5 hours up and down. Check official information for fees.

  8. Sendai Tanabata Festival

    Held every year on August 6-8, Sendai's signature summer festival fills the downtown arcades with colorful decorations. Check official information for fireworks and other events.

What to eat

Gyutan (grilled beef tongue)

Sendai's signature dish: thick-cut beef tongue grilled over charcoal, often served as a set with barley rice and oxtail soup.

Zunda mochi

Rice cakes topped with a sweet green paste of mashed edamame. Try zunda shakes and other sweets too.

Sasakamaboko

Grilled fish cake shaped like a bamboo leaf — a popular souvenir.

Harakomeshi

Rice cooked in salmon broth and topped with salmon and salmon roe. Availability depends on the season.

Seafood and oysters

Coastal Miyagi is rich in seafood; try oyster dishes in Matsushima.

    Airport Access Line to Sendai Station, check in, then the Loople bus to the Sendai Castle site and Zuihoden; gyutan dinner in Ichibancho.

    JR Senseki Line to Matsushima: Zuiganji, Godaido, a bay cruise and oysters, then back for an evening walk on Jozenji-dori.

  3. Day 3

    Day trip to Yamadera on the JR Senzan Line to climb the stone steps, stopping at Sakunami Onsen on the way back, or stay a night at Akiu Onsen.

  4. Day 4

    Osaki Hachimangu, zunda mochi and sasakamaboko souvenirs, then the Access Line to the airport with plenty of time.
