When to go

The dry season from December to May is best, especially January to April when skies are clear and seas calm. June to November is the wet season with frequent showers, and typhoons in September-November can cancel boat trips. Resort prices rise sharply in peak holiday seasons.

Airport to the city

Resort or hotel pickup

The easiest option if you're staying on Mactan. Many flights arrive late at night, so booking ahead is reassuring.

Time about 15-30 min to Mactan resortsCost varies by hotel (included or extra)

Grab car

Fixed fares in the app, no haggling. Board at the designated pickup zone at the airport.

Airport taxi

Take one from the official taxi rank. Regular metered taxis are usually cheaper than airport taxis; make sure the meter is on.

Getting around

Grab car

The easiest and safest way between Cebu City and Mactan. Bridge traffic gets heavy at rush hour.

Metered taxis

Mostly white regular taxis. Ask for the meter, and carry small notes as drivers may lack change.

Jeepneys

Very cheap shared local transport. Routes are confusing and crowded, so treat it as a short experience and watch your belongings.

Resort shuttles and tour vans

Some Mactan resorts run shuttles to malls or the city. Tour vans are easiest for Oslob and Moalboal.

Boats (island hopping, Bohol ferry)

Island hopping uses local bangka boats; Bohol ferries leave from Cebu City's port. Trips can be cancelled in bad weather.

Where to stay

Mactan Island resorts

Good for: Families, honeymoons, relaxing

Close to the airport, with resorts offering private beaches and pools. Near island-hopping departure points.

Cebu IT Park

Good for: City sights, dining

A tidy district of restaurants, cafés and hotels where walking around at night is relatively comfortable.

Around the big city malls

Good for: Shopping, convenience

Big malls make eating and shopping easy, and they're a good rainy-day option.

Moalboal

Good for: Diving and snorkeling

A seaside town in southwest Cebu with sardine runs and sea turtles. Around 3 hours by car from the city, so stay a night or two.

Around Oslob

Good for: Whale sharks, waterfalls

At Cebu's southern tip; many activities start at dawn, so some travelers stay nearby.

Top sights

  1. Island hopping

Cebu's signature trip: a boat tour of islands around Mactan with snorkeling stops. Always wear a life jacket, and reschedule if the weather turns bad.

  2. Basilica del Santo Niño and Magellan's Cross

Symbols of Philippine Catholic history, side by side in old Cebu City. The basilica is a place of worship, so dress modestly and keep quiet.

  3. Fort San Pedro

A small Spanish-era fort that fits easily into an old-town walking route.

  5. Moalboal sardine run

Snorkel right off the beach among huge schools of sardines. Don't stand on or touch coral.

  6. Kawasan Falls

Turquoise pools and a popular canyoneering route down the river. Choose operators with professional guides and proper safety gear.

  7. Oslob whale sharks

Famous for close encounters at dawn, but the sharks are attracted with feeding, which raises animal-welfare concerns. Decide carefully whether to take part.

  8. Bohol day trip

The neighboring island known for the Chocolate Hills and tiny tarsiers. About 2 hours by ferry from Cebu City, so start early.
