The main island of the Northern Mariana Islands, a US territory, famous for emerald water, coral reefs and nearby Managaha Island. Just over four hours from Incheon, it is a favorite for family trips and short beach breaks.

When to go

The dry season from roughly December to June brings clear skies and calm seas. July to November sees more rain and possible typhoons that can halt boats and flights. It is hot with strong sun all year. Prices rise sharply during Korean holidays and school breaks.

Getting around

Rental car

There is almost no public transport, so a car is the easiest way around. Traffic drives on the right.

Taxi

Handy for short trips between Garapan and resorts. Confirm the fare before you ride.

Hotel and shopping shuttles

Many resorts run shuttles to Garapan. Get the timetable at check-in.

Walking

Central Garapan is walkable. Midday is very hot, so bring a hat and water.

Good for: First visit, dining, shopping, nightlife

The island's center with restaurants, shops and hotels, walkable and close to the beach.

Around Micro Beach

Good for: Sunsets, beach walks

A white-sand beach next to Garapan with beautiful sunsets and a view of Managaha Island.

San Antonio (southwest)

Good for: Resort stays, families

A quiet coast of large resorts, including one with a water park. Close to the airport.

Susupe and Chalan Kanoa

Good for: Local feel, value

West-coast villages with calm lagoon beaches and local restaurants.

The north

Good for: Nature and views, quiet

Cliffs, lookouts and a famous dive spot. Few places to stay — usually explored by car.

Top sights

  1. Managaha Island

    A small island a short boat ride away, great for snorkeling in clear water. Check island fees and boat fares officially, and do not step on the coral.

  2. Micro Beach

    Known for calm, clear water and sunsets. Lovely for an evening walk.

  3. Bird Island Lookout

    A lookout over a rocky islet where seabirds nest and the deep blue sea.

  4. The Grotto

    A natural sea cave famous with divers. Waves and currents are strong, so beginners should only go with a professional guide.

  5. Banzai Cliff and Suicide Cliff

    Where many lost their lives at the end of the Pacific War, now marked by memorials. Please visit quietly.

  6. Last Command Post

    A historic site with a wartime command bunker and guns.

  7. Garapan street market

    An evening food market held on a set weekday. Check local information for the day and time.

  8. Tinian (day trip)

    The neighboring island, reachable by boat or small plane for a day, with quiet beaches and historic sites. Check services in advance.

What to eat

Red rice

Chamorro rice colored with achiote seeds, served with barbecue.

A tangy Chamorro dish of chicken or seafood with lemon, coconut and chili.

Soy-marinated meat and chicken grilled over charcoal, local style.

Try mango, papaya and coconut in season. Fresh fruit cannot be brought into Korea.
