When to go
Spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) bring mild, pleasant weather. Summer (December to February) is beach season but hot, with prices peaking over Christmas and New Year. Winter (June to August) is cool and quieter.
Airport to the city
Taxi
Metered taxis from the arrivals rank. Can beat the train for groups of three or four with luggage.
Rideshare (Uber, DiDi and others)
Board at the dedicated rideshare pickup zone at each terminal. Prices vary by time of day.
Getting around
Opal / Contactless Cards
Tap a contactless bank card or phone on trains, buses, ferries, light rail and metro. Daily and weekly fare caps apply, and weekends are cheaper.
Ferries
From Circular Quay to Manly, Taronga Zoo, Watsons Bay and more, a sightseeing trip in itself. The Manly ferry gives classic Opera House views.
Trains and Metro
Sydney Trains and the driverless Metro link the city and suburbs. The Blue Mountains are reachable by train.
Light Rail and Buses
Light rail runs down George Street from Circular Quay; reach Bondi Beach by train plus bus.

Walk to the Opera House and Harbour Bridge with the best transport links. Hotel prices are high.
The Rocks
Good for: Couples, history

Darling Harbour
Good for: Families, night views
Aquarium, museums and waterfront dining, great with kids. Fireworks are held on some Saturday nights.
Surry Hills

Bondi / Manly
Good for: Beach stays, surfing
Wake up by the sea for swims and coastal walks. Longer rides for city sightseeing.

Free to admire outside; go inside on a paid guided tour or for a performance. Especially beautiful when lit up at night.
Sydney Harbour Bridge
The bridge walkway is free; BridgeClimb over the arch is pricey but unforgettable. The Pylon Lookout is a cheaper paid option.
Royal Botanic Garden & Mrs Macquarie's Chair
Free gardens with the best photo spot framing both the Opera House and the Bridge.
Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk
A popular 6 km clifftop walk past beaches, about 2-3 hours. Bring a hat, sunscreen and water.
Manly Beach
Beach suburb about 30 minutes by ferry from Circular Quay; the harbour ride is a highlight.
Blue Mountains National Park
About 2 hours by train, with Three Sisters lookouts and eucalyptus forest walks. Plan a full day.
Taronga Zoo
Hillside zoo across the harbour with koalas, kangaroos and city views. Arrive by ferry.
The Rocks Markets & QVB
Weekend craft and food stalls at The Rocks, and the ornate Queen Victoria Building for shopping.

Brunch and Flat Whites
Sydney's cafe culture runs on avocado toast and flat whites. Brunch about 25-35 AUD, coffee about 5-6 AUD.
Sydney Rock Oysters
Small local oysters with an intense flavour. Try them at seafood restaurants or the Sydney Fish Market.

Local tips
- Most visitors need a visa before arrival. Eligible passports (for example the US, Canada, Japan, Korea, Singapore) apply for an ETA via the official Australian ETA app, with a service fee of about 20 AUD, valid 12 months for stays of up to 3 months each. EU and UK passports use the free eVisitor; avoid third-party sites that add fees.
- Declare all food, meat, fruit and seeds on arrival; undeclared items can bring heavy fines.
- UV is extremely strong; wear sunscreen and sunglasses even on cloudy days.
- Only swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents are common.
- Cards are accepted almost everywhere; some venues add card surcharges or Sunday and public holiday surcharges. Tipping is not expected.
- The Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS) lets you claim GST at the airport on purchases of 300 AUD or more from one store.
- Plugs are Type I, so bring an adapter. Tap water is safe to drink.
