When to go

Summer (December to February) is best for beaches and islands but is the busiest season. Autumn (March to May) stays warm with thinner crowds and is a great pick. Spring (September to November) suits coastal walks and island trips, while winter (June to August) is cooler with chilly waterfront winds. Weather changes quickly, so bring a light jacket.

Airport to the city

AirportLink Bus + Train

The orange AirportLink bus runs between the international and domestic terminals and Puhinui Station about every 10 minutes (4:30am to 12:40am, daily). Change to the train at Puhinui for the city centre. Pay with an AT HOP card or a contactless debit/credit card or phone (Apple Pay, Google Pay and others), tagging on and off.

Time including the transfer, check AT Journey PlannerCost distance-based fare (check official)

Taxi / Shuttle

From the Transport Pick-up Zone, a 1-2 minute walk from international arrivals via Door 11. The airport pick-up fee is included in the fare. Handy with lots of luggage or late arrivals.

Time varies with trafficCost about NZD 38-105 (airport indicative fare, check official)

Rideshare (Uber and others)

Board at the dedicated rideshare pick-up zone at each terminal; zones can differ by app. Prices vary by time of day, so check in the app.

Getting around

Contactless / AT HOP Card

Tap a contactless debit or credit card or phone on buses, trains and most ferries, using the same card to tag on and off; each traveller needs their own card. Contactless gets a daily fare cap (about NZD 20) automatically, and an AT HOP card adds a 7-day cap for longer stays. Check fares officially.

Ferries

From the Downtown Ferry Terminal to Devonport (about 12 min), Waiheke Island (about 40 min), Rangitoto Island (about 25 min) and more. Waiheke ferries and tourist services do not take contactless, so check official information.

Trains

Several lines link the city centre and suburbs, including Puhinui Station for the airport bus. Check routes and times in the AT Journey Planner.

Buses

Reach neighbourhoods like Ponsonby, Parnell and Mission Bay by bus, paying the same way as on trains.

Top sights

  1. Sky Tower

Auckland's 328 m landmark, with observation levels offering 360-degree city and harbour views. Paid entry to the observation decks.

  2. Maungawhau / Mt Eden

A dormant volcano near the centre with a deep crater and panoramic views. The summit is vehicle-free, so walk up. It is wāhi tapu (a sacred place), so stay on the paths and out of the crater.

  3. Auckland Domain & Auckland Museum

A large hilltop park crowned by the museum, showcasing Māori and Pacific culture and natural history. International visitors need a ticket; check the official site.

  4. Waiheke Island

About 40 minutes by ferry, with beaches, vineyards and coastal walks. Ideal as a day trip.

  5. Rangitoto Island

A volcanic island about 25 minutes by ferry. The summit track is about 2 hours / 7 km return. There are no shops or drinking water, so bring food, 1-2 litres of water per person, sun protection and sturdy shoes, and don't miss the return ferry.

  6. Waitākere Ranges & Piha Beach

Rainforest ranges and a black-sand surf beach west of the city. Piha has big waves and strong rips: swim only between the red and yellow flags, and stay out when no lifeguards are on duty. Some tracks are closed to protect kauri trees; use footwear cleaning stations on open tracks.

  7. Devonport

A 12-minute ferry ride to a seaside village; climb its volcanic hills for harbour and skyline views.

  8. Day Trips (Hobbiton, Waitomo)

Matamata, home of the Hobbiton Movie Set, is about 2 hours' drive, and the Waitomo glowworm caves about 3 hours. Allow a full day.
