Flowers bloom all year, earning it the name 'City of Flowers', and a legend of five celestials riding rams gives it another, 'City of Rams'. Highlights include Beijing Road, a central axis that has not moved in over 2,200 years, the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, 'the gem of Lingnan architecture', the European-style buildings of Shamian Island and Pearl River night cruises. Ideal for fans of Cantonese food such as dim sum, char siu and wonton noodles.

When to go

Flowers bloom all year round, so every season has something in bloom. On the Double Ninth Festival (ninth day of the ninth lunar month) locals traditionally climb Baiyun Mountain and it gets very busy, and sights are packed during big holidays such as National Day and Spring Festival, so avoid those if you can. Check official weather and typhoon forecasts before you go.
