The short answer

Shenzhen is a coastal city in southern Guangdong next to Hong Kong, made China's first special economic zone in 1980 and since grown into an international metropolis. Nantou Ancient Town and Dapeng Fortress, both founded in 1394, Chiwan Tianhou Temple, the largest temple to the sea goddess in Guangdong, Wutong Mountain, the city's highest peak, the 13 km Shenzhen Bay Park and the beaches and seafood of the Dapeng Peninsula give you city and nature in one trip.

Guangzhou is a major city on the Pearl River, described as the starting point of the Maritime Silk Road and the heart of Lingnan culture. Highlights include Beijing Road, a central axis that has not moved in over 2,200 years, the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, 'the gem of Lingnan architecture', the European-style buildings of Shamian Island and Pearl River night cruises. It suits fans of Cantonese food such as dim sum, char siu and wonton noodles.

Best for: Shenzhen suits travelers who want seaside park walks, mountains and beaches, old forts and seafood. Guangzhou suits lovers of old streets and historic buildings, morning tea and dim sum, and riverside night views.

From the airport to the city

At Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport (SZX), the entrance to Metro Line 11 is inside the Ground Transportation Center (GTC) concourse. From Airport (T3) station, Line 11 runs via Bao'an, Nanshan, Houhai, Chegongmiao and Futian, and Line 20 runs from Airport North towards Shenzhen World. Metro fares are distance-based, from CNY 2 for the first 4 km. There are also Airport Express buses, with routes to areas such as Futian, Luohu and Nanshan. Check official information before you go for routes, operating hours (including any night routes) and fares.

At Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN), T1 closed for renovation from 7 May 2026, so Airport South metro station is temporarily out of use. Always check your terminal (T2 or T3). T2 is served by Metro Line 3's Airport North station; for T3, take Line 3 or Line 9 to Gaozeng station, leave by Exit B and change to the 'Konggang Line 2 Branch' connecting bus (about 12-15 minutes, CNY 2). From T3, airport buses run to eight city districts with no transfer needed, from CNY 19.9.

Both airports have set pick-up points for taxis and ride-hailing apps. If you have heavy luggage or arrive late, taxis are handy; have your hotel address ready in Chinese. Both airports also have intercity rail stations.

How many days, and what it costs

Plan on 2 to 3 days for Shenzhen and 3 to 4 days for Guangzhou. The suggested Shenzhen plan spends one day on Nantou Ancient Town, Chiwan Tianhou Temple, Shenzhen Bay Park and night views from Lianhua Hill Park, and one day on the Dapeng Peninsula (Dapeng Fortress and Xichong Beach). In Guangzhou, one day covers the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, Shamian Island and a Pearl River night cruise, and the other Baiyun Mountain, Yuexiu Park and Beijing Road.

Total daily budgets depend on how you travel. In Shenzhen, hotel and food costs vary a lot by date, so check booking sites; for Guangzhou, sample entry and transport prices give a sense of costs. Rather than declaring one city cheaper, use the prices below to get a feel.

Weather by month, side by side

Shenzhen's figures are 1971–2000 normals for Shenzhen (WMO city data) from the WMO World Weather Information Service — China Meteorological Administration; Guangzhou's are 1991–2020 normals for Guangzhou station from the China Meteorological Administration submission · WMO normals collection (NOAA NCEI). The periods and sources differ, so treat the numbers below as a rough comparison. Each line gives high/low temperature and monthly rainfall for the same month in both cities.

Shenzhen has a subtropical monsoon climate with warmth and plenty of rain. Some sights, such as Fairy Lake Botanical Garden, close during typhoon or rainstorm warnings, so check official weather warnings before and during your trip. In Guangzhou flowers bloom all year round, so every season has something in bloom; check official weather and typhoon forecasts before you go.

Neither city has a single must-go month. In the numbers, temperatures in the two cities are similar, with July highs of 32°C in Shenzhen and 33°C in Guangzhou. In both cities, January and October get less rain than April and July.

Know the busy times too. In Guangzhou, big holidays such as National Day and Spring Festival, and Baiyun Mountain on the Double Ninth Festival (ninth day of the ninth lunar month), get very crowded. At Chiwan Tianhou Temple in Shenzhen, the two weeks before Tianhou's birthday (23rd day of the 3rd lunar month) are the busiest period and described as an ideal time to visit.

What you'll see and eat

Shenzhen is old walls, sea and mountains. Walk Nantou Ancient Town, built in 1394, then visit Chiwan Tianhou Temple, the largest Tianhou temple in Guangdong, Shenzhen Bay Park, a 13 km seaside park free of motor vehicles (Metro Line 9), and the night views of downtown Futian from Lianhua Hill Park. Wutong Mountain (944 m) takes about five hours to the top and back even on the broad road, so bring plenty of water and set off early. Dapeng Fortress and Xichong Beach on the Dapeng Peninsula are far from downtown, so set aside a full day.

Guangzhou is old streets and historic buildings. The classics are the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall (ticket sales and entry stop at 17:00, so go in the morning), Shamian Island with its old trees and European-style buildings, Yuexiu Park and Zhenhai Tower, built in 1380 (Guangzhou Museum), Beijing Road pedestrian street lined with arcade-style buildings, and the granite Sacred Heart Cathedral. In the evening, see Canton Tower from a Pearl River night cruise, and from Moxing Ridge (382 m), the main peak of Baiyun Mountain, you can look over the city and the Pearl River.

The food differs too. Shenzhen centers on Dapeng's sea urchin fried rice, salt-baked hairy crab (in season from after the Mid-Autumn Festival until before Spring Festival) and Hakka food. Guangzhou is about morning tea and dim sum in traditional teahouses, char siu, wonton noodles, claypot rice, rice noodle rolls and tong sui, with Dezheng Middle Road, Wenming Road and Longjin Road known as food streets.

How to choose, or do both

For seaside parks and mountains, old forts and seafood, choose Shenzhen; for old streets and historic buildings, dim sum and riverside night views, choose Guangzhou. To do both, add up the suggested lengths (Shenzhen 2 to 3 days, Guangzhou 3 to 4 days).

Check official railway information for how to travel between the two cities and how long it takes. Escalators and lifts lead from the airport terminal and the GTC to Shenzhen Airport station on the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Intercity Railway. The QR code in the 'Guangzhou Metro' app also works on the metro in other cities, including Shenzhen.

If you are adding Hong Kong, Shenzhen has several checkpoints, including Futian, Luohu and Shenzhen Bay, while short-haul high-speed trains link Hong Kong West Kowloon station with Guangzhounan, Guangzhoudong and Guangzhouxintang. Check official information for opening hours and entry rules.
