Gyeongju travel guide

The capital of the Silla kingdom from 57 BC to AD 935, home to UNESCO-listed Bulguksa and Seokguram, the Gyeongju Historic Areas and Yangdong Village. Cheomseongdae, Daereungwon and Donggung Palace sit close together in the centre for walking, and a city bus takes you on to Bulguksa.

When to go

Gyeongju City lists flower spots by season: cherry blossoms along the Daereungwon stone wall, Bomun Lake path and Bulguksa plus canola flowers at Cheomseongdae in spring; lotus at Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond and Yangdong Village in summer; pink muhly at Cheomseongdae and cosmos along the Hwangnyongsa path in autumn. Check bloom timing on the city tourism site's flower calendar and cherry blossom alert.

Getting there

KTX / SRT (Gyeongju Station, formerly Singyeongju)

High-speed trains stop at Gyeongju Station (80 Gyeongjuyeok-ro, Geoncheon-eup). The station was renamed from Singyeongju to Gyeongju on 28 December 2023, so book tickets to 'Gyeongju'. Gyeongju City says KTX trains from Seoul Station run about hourly. Check timetables and fares on Korail (letskorail.com).

Express and intercity buses

Buses arrive at Gyeongju Express Bus Terminal (2 Taejong-ro 685beon-gil). Express and intercity buses run from Seoul; intercity buses run from Daegu and Busan. Book through official channels such as the national express bus booking site.

Getting around

City buses

Flat fares regardless of distance: KRW 1,300 for regular buses, KRW 1,700 for seat buses, KRW 50 off with a transit card. With a card you get one transfer a day to a different route within 30 minutes of getting off (KRW 400 extra from a regular to a seat bus).

Buses 10 and 11 (main sights loop)

Bus 10 runs from the terminal via Cheomseongdae, Bunhwangsa and Bomun Lake Resort to Bulguksa, then back via Tongiljeon, Gyeongju National Museum and Donggung Palace. Bus 11 runs the same loop the other way. First bus 06:00, last 21:40 (from the terminal), about every 20 minutes. Bus 10-1 turns back at Gyeongju World and does not reach Bulguksa.

The '전국스마트버스' (national smart bus) app shows real-time arrivals and intervals. Check routes and timetables at the Gyeongju traffic information centre (its.gyeongju.go.kr).

From Gyeongju Station (KTX) into town

Several city bus routes stop at Gyeongju Station. Route numbers and times can change, so check the traffic information centre or the station's tourist information centre (054-771-1336).

Where to stay

City centre (Daereungwon, Cheomseongdae, Gyochon)

Good for: First visit, walking the heritage sites

From the Wolseong-dong Community Centre stop on bus 10 it is a 5–7 minute walk to Cheomseongdae and Daereungwon and 8–10 minutes to Donggung Palace.

Bomun Lake Resort

Good for: Lakeside hotels and condos, a relaxed stay

A resort area of hotels, condos and leisure facilities around Bomun Lake. Bus 10 stops at most of the hotels.

Around Bulguksa

Good for: Seeing Bulguksa and Seokguram early

Buses 10 and 11 turn around at Bulguksa. Seokguram is about 3 km from Bulguksa by hiking trail, or about 9 km by road.

Top sights

  1. Bulguksa Temple

    The great temple of Silla Buddhist culture, rebuilt on a large scale by Kim Dae-seong in 751. Listed by UNESCO with Seokguram in 1995, it holds seven national treasures. Korea Tourism Organization lists admission as free.

  2. Seokguram Grotto

    A man-made grotto built by Kim Dae-seong under King Gyeongdeok (742–765), its main Buddha facing the East Sea. About 3 km from Bulguksa by trail, about 9 km by road. Free; opening hours vary by season.

  3. Daereungwon Tomb Complex · Cheonmachong

    Tombs of Silla kings, queens and nobles, part of the Gyeongju Historic Areas listed by UNESCO in 2000. Cheonmachong, excavated in 1973, is the only tomb with its interior open to visitors. Daereungwon is free; Cheonmachong costs KRW 3,000 for adults.

  4. Cheomseongdae Observatory

    An observatory about 9 m tall from the reign of Queen Seondeok (632–647), built of 365 stones. Free; open 09:00–22:00 in summer and 09:00–21:00 in winter.

  5. Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond

    A secondary palace where the crown prince lived and banquets were held. King Munmu dug the pond with three islands in 674. Rated Gyeongju's top night-view spot. Open 09:00–22:00 (last entry 21:30); KRW 3,000 for adults.

  6. Gyochon Village · Woljeonggyo Bridge

    Gyochon is a hanok village with the house of the Gyeongju Choi clan, who kept their wealth for 12 generations; open 24 hours and free. Next to it, Woljeonggyo recreates the bridge that linked Wolseong and Namsan in 760; completed in April 2018, it is Korea's largest wooden bridge (09:00–22:00, free).

  7. Gyeongju National Museum

    Artefacts of Silla (57 BC–AD 935) in the Silla History Gallery and Silla Art Gallery. Free except paid special exhibitions; weekdays 10:00–18:00, weekends and holidays 10:00–19:00. Closed on 1 January, Seollal and Chuseok days, and the first Monday of March and November.

  8. Yangdong Village

    Listed by UNESCO in 2010 as part of 'Historic Villages of Korea: Hahoe and Yangdong'. About 160 old houses, 54 of them over 200 years old. KRW 4,000 for adults; 09:00–19:00 April–September, 09:00–18:00 October–March.

What to eat

Gyeongju-ppang (Gyeongju bread)

Gyeongju's signature snack: soft bread filled with not-too-sweet red bean paste, first made around Hwangnam-dong in 1939.

Chalbori-ppang (glutinous barley bread)

Chewy bread made with local glutinous barley; the red bean filling is not very sweet, and it is a popular gift.

Gyeongju hanwoo beef

Gyeongju is described as Korea's largest hanwoo (Korean beef) producing area, and it has its own local hanwoo brand.

Yukgaejang (spicy beef soup)

Gyeongju's local food brand 'Byeolchaeban' features a clean-tasting yukgaejang made with six local ingredients, including hanwoo brisket and tripe, bracken, gondalbi greens and green onion.

Gondalbi bibimbap

Gondalbi greens grown in Sannae-myeon with mushrooms and water parsley, mixed with a doenjang and anchovy sauce instead of chilli paste.

  1. Day 1

    Arrive → Daereungwon and Cheonmachong → Cheomseongdae → Gyochon Village and Woljeonggyo → Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond at night.

    Gyeongju National Museum → bus 11 to Bulguksa → Seokguram → Yangdong Village if time allows, then pick up Gyeongju bread on the way to Gyeongju Station.
