Otaru Travel Guide

A port city 30-40 minutes from Sapporo by train, loved for its canal lined with stone warehouses and streets of old banks and merchant buildings. Stroll the gas-lit canal at dusk, take in the Mt. Tengu night view and feast on sushi and seafood. Many visit as a day trip from Sapporo, but an overnight stay lets you enjoy the quiet canal at night.

✈ Otaru has no airport, so we show flights to the nearest gateway, New Chitose Airport. From New Chitose Airport Station beneath the terminal, the JR Rapid Airport train reaches Otaru in about 1 hour 15 minutes (some trains require a change at Sapporo), and an airport connection bus also runs to central Otaru. Check official information for timetables and fares.

When to go

Late spring to autumn is easiest for walking. In February, the Otaru Snow Light Path festival lights the canal and an old railway line with snow candles (February 6-13 in 2027). Winters bring heavy snow and icy streets, so prepare for cold and slippery conditions; some facilities close or shorten hours in winter.
