Phnom Penh Travel Guide

Cambodia's capital brings together the Royal Palace, the National Museum, a riverside pedestrian street and memorial sites of the Khmer Rouge era. The Ministry of Tourism names the Royal Palace, Wat Phnom and the riverfront as highlights, and the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and Choeung Ek Genocidal Center, inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 2025, are here too.

When to go

The Ministry of Tourism lists Phnom Penh as a year-round destination. During Khmer New Year (three days from around 14 April every year), New Year events are held at Wat Phnom and on the riverside Walk Street, and every 9 November the Independence Day ceremony takes place at the Independence Monument. During the Pchum Ben holiday in 2026 (9-13 October), roads and buses can be busy with people travelling home. Check seasonal weather officially.

Airport to the city

Techo International Airport (KTI): Airport Express Bus

Phnom Penh's flights use Techo International Airport (KTI), opened on 9 September 2025, about 20 km south of the city. According to the airport, the Airport Express Bus is run by Phnom Penh City Bus under the guidance of Phnom Penh City Hall. It links the airport with Kouch Kanong Circle Bus Station via Monivong Boulevard, stopping at places such as in front of Royal Cambodian Railways and the Royal University of Law and Economics.

Techo International Airport (KTI): taxi

According to the airport, taxis and app-based ride services are available at the terminal exit. The airport recommends using the official taxi counters or trusted ride-hailing apps; fares vary with traffic and destination.

City buses (Phnom Penh City Bus)

Phnom Penh runs daily public bus services, including the Airport Express Bus. Check routes and fares officially.

Taxis & ride-hailing apps

The airport's official page lists both standard taxis and app-based ride services. Confirm the fare before setting off.

Walking (palace & riverside)

The National Museum stands right next to the Royal Palace, and the riverside Walk Street runs up to the front of the palace, so the three are easy to link on foot.

Top sights

  1. Royal Palace

    Named by the Ministry of Tourism, together with Wat Phnom and the riverfront, as a Phnom Penh highlight. According to the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, the Royal Ballet of Cambodia, a UNESCO-listed intangible heritage, was traditionally based within the palace and was sometimes called 'Lakhon Luong' (the King's Theatre). Check opening hours, fees and dress rules officially.

  2. National Museum of Cambodia

    A traditional Khmer-style building designed by George Groslier, inaugurated during Khmer New Year on 13 April 1920. It closed during the Khmer Rouge years (1975-1979) and reopened on 13 April 1979. Open daily 8:00-17:00 (last tickets 16:30); foreign adults USD 10, ages 10-17 USD 5. Photography is not allowed in the galleries, only of the exterior and courtyard. The visitor entrance is at the corner of Streets 13 and 178.

  3. Chaktomuk riverside Walk Street

    Phnom Penh's first and largest riverside pedestrian street, running up to the front of the Royal Palace, with food and souvenir stalls and traditional and contemporary performances. The Ministry of Tourism still presents it in 2026 as one of the capital's newest tourism products. Check the opening days and hours officially.

  4. Wat Phnom

    A Ministry of Tourism highlight that the government calls the Wat Phnom Historical Site. During Khmer New Year it hosts New Year rituals such as the Srang Preah (Buddha bathing) ceremony. Check hours and fees officially.

  5. Independence Monument

    Marks independence from France on 9 November 1953. Every year on Independence Day the King lights the Victory Flame here, and it burns for three days.

  6. Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S-21)

    A high school built in 1962 that the Khmer Rouge regime (1975-1979) turned into the S-21 prison; it became a memorial museum in 1979. Between 15,000 and 20,000 people were imprisoned here, and only 12 inmates were alive when Phnom Penh was liberated. Open daily 8:00-17:00 (including public holidays); foreign adults USD 5, ages 10-17 USD 3, under 10 free (ID required); cash only (riel or US dollars). The USD 5 audio guide is available in Korean, among other languages. The museum notes the exhibits may not be appropriate for visitors aged 14 and under.

  7. Choeung Ek Genocidal Center

    In Choeung Ek, Dangkor district of Phnom Penh, the site where prisoners interrogated at S-21 were executed. The Tuol Sleng museum places it about 15 km from the city. Today it is a place to remember the victims and learn about peace, and it was inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage together with Tuol Sleng on 11 July 2025. Check hours and fees officially.

What to eat

Phnom Penh Kuy Teav

A dish bearing the city's name, registered by Cambodia's Ministry of Commerce as a collective mark under the name 'Phnom Penh Kuy Teav'.

Num banhchok (Khmer noodles)

Traditional Khmer noodles, sold at stalls even at Khmer New Year cultural events. The Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts is preparing to nominate it for UNESCO's intangible heritage list.

Amok

A traditional Khmer dish, well known enough that amok paste is exported to overseas markets. Fish amok is among the signature dishes Cambodian chefs showcase abroad.

Prahok

Cambodia's traditional fermented fish. Siem Reap Prahok was recognised as a Geographical Indication (GI) product in 2025.

Walk Street snacks

Stalls selling local treats and snacks line the riverside pedestrian street, perfect for grazing as you stroll.

    Airport Express Bus or taxi into the city and check in → National Museum (8:00-17:00, last tickets 16:30) → Royal Palace (check hours officially) → on a weekend, an evening stroll on the riverside Walk Street.
