A port city in northern China about 120 km from Beijing, whose name, meaning "the Emperor's Port", dates from the Ming dynasty. After it opened as a treaty port in 1860, several countries set up concessions here, leaving rows of Western-style buildings along the Haihe River, best seen in the Five Great Avenues and the Italian Style Town. Add Ancient Culture Street and the Tianhou Temple, Yangliuqing woodblock prints, jianbing guozi breakfasts, and a thousand-year-old temple and the Great Wall in northern Jizhou, and each day feels different.
