Hakodate Travel Guide

Hakodate, a port city at the southern tip of Hokkaido, is famous for the night view from Mt. Hakodate, the star-shaped Goryokaku fort and the Western-style buildings of hilly Motomachi. Enjoy squid, seafood and shio ramen while getting around at an easy pace by streetcar.

When to go

Late April to early May, when Goryokaku Park's cherry trees bloom, and the cool months of June-September are best for walking. The Hakodate Port Festival runs in early August and the Christmas Fantasy lights up the Bay Area in December. Winter brings snow and icy streets, and the Mt. Hakodate road closes to vehicles in winter.

Airport to the city

New Chitose Airport (CTS) → Minami-Chitose → Hakodate Station

Ride the Rapid Airport train one stop to Minami-Chitose, then change to the Limited Express Hokuto. JR Hokkaido limited expresses are all reserved seats, so you need a reserved-seat ticket.

New Chitose Airport (CTS) → Sapporo → Hakodate

If you're combining Sapporo, take the Rapid Airport train to Sapporo Station, then the Limited Express Hokuto down to Hakodate.

Hakodate Airport (HKD) → Hakodate Station

You can also connect via domestic flights to Hakodate Airport. Connections from Incheon vary by season, so check airline schedules. There's no railway to the airport; buses run to Hakodate Station and downtown.

Getting around

Hakodate City Tram (streetcar)

The backbone for visitors, linking Hakodate Station, Jujigai, Goryokaku and Yunokawa Onsen. Fares are about ¥210-260 by distance, and a one-day pass is available.

IC cards

Nationwide IC cards such as Suica and Kitaca work on the tram. Tap the reader both when boarding and when getting off.

Buses

Use buses for the airport, Mt. Hakodate and places the tram doesn't reach. Check official information for routes and times.

JR trains

Use JR for Onuma Park and for Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station, where the Shinkansen stops.

Walking

Motomachi and the Bay Area are best explored on foot. The slopes are steep, so wear comfortable shoes.

Red brick warehouses, sloping streets and the ropeway nearby make it great for evening walks and night views.

A busy district near Goryokaku Park with restaurants and shops, linked by tram to the station and Motomachi.

Yunokawa Onsen

Good for: Hot springs, relaxed stays

A seaside hot spring town with onsen ryokan and a free footbath in front of the tram stop.

Top sights

  1. Mt. Hakodate night view

    The ropeway reaches the summit observatory in about 3 minutes (about ¥1,800 round trip). It's busiest around sunset, and there are inspection closures, so check official information.

  2. Goryokaku Park

    A star-shaped Western-style fort, now a Special Historic Site. It's a cherry blossom spot in spring, with the reconstructed Hakodate Magistrate's Office inside.

  3. Goryokaku Tower

    A paid observation tower for looking down on the star-shaped fort. Check official information for prices and hours.

  4. Hakodate Morning Market

    A market of seafood and fruit stalls and eateries right by Hakodate Station. It opens early, perfect for a seafood rice bowl breakfast.

  5. Motomachi slopes & churches

    Slopes such as Hachimanzaka lead to Western-style buildings like the Hakodate Orthodox Church and the Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward. About 10 minutes' walk from Jujigai tram stop.

  6. Kanemori Red Brick Warehouses

    Warehouses built in 1909, now shops and restaurants in the Bay Area. They look best when lit up in the evening.

  7. Yunokawa Onsen

    A hot spring town reachable by tram from downtown. Rest your feet at the free footbath in front of the stop.

  8. Onuma Quasi-National Park (day trip)

    A nature park of lakes, islets and Mt. Komagatake, about 20-30 minutes by limited express from JR Hakodate Station.

What to eat

Squid

Hakodate's signature seafood. In season from summer to autumn, try glassy fresh squid sashimi. Prices vary by place.

Seafood rice bowls

Bowls topped with sea urchin, salmon roe and crab, a morning market favorite. Prices vary widely by topping, so check first.

Shio ramen

Hakodate-style ramen in a clear salt broth — light and clean, a nice break between seafood meals.

Hairy crab and crab dishes

Try Hokkaido crab at the market. It's pricey, so check the weight and price first.

Dairy desserts

Soft-serve and sweets made with Hokkaido milk are easy to find in the Bay Area and Motomachi.
