When to go

September to March is best for wildflowers and beach days. In spring (August-October) wildflowers bloom in Kings Park and the Swan Valley. Summer averages a maximum of about 29°C, with February usually the hottest, and the cooling afternoon sea breeze known as the 'Fremantle Doctor' brings relief. Winter averages about 12°C.

Airport to the city

Transperth Airport Line train (T1 and T2)

From Airport Central Station, serving international T1 and T2, trains run straight to Perth Station in the city. Use a SmartRider card or a contactless Visa or Mastercard.

Train plus bus 292 (T3 and T4)

From T3 and T4, take bus route 292 to Redcliffe Station, then the Airport Line train. Redcliffe to Perth Station takes about 15 minutes.

Taxi or rental car

A taxi helps with heavy luggage or late arrivals. Major rental car companies are at the airport, handy if you plan trips outside the city.

Getting around

Transperth trains and buses

Transperth runs Perth's public transport. A 2 Sections trip (3.2 km or less) is about A$2.40 and a Go Anywhere fare (anywhere within 3 hours) is about A$3.50 in cash, cheaper with SmartRider or a contactless Visa or Mastercard. Always tag on and off.

Free CAT buses and free zones

The color-coded CAT buses in the city center are free and run every 5-15 minutes. Trains are free between City West, Elizabeth Quay and Claisebrook stations when you tag on and off with SmartRider or contactless.

Ferry (Elizabeth Quay to South Perth)

Transperth ferries cross the Swan River in about 10 minutes, with great skyline views.

Free Sundays

Travel on Transperth is free every Sunday when you use SmartRider or contactless payment. Cash tickets are not included.

Rental cars

Good for the Swan Valley and other day trips. Australia drives on the left, and don't drive if you plan to visit wineries.

Where to stay

Perth CBD and Elizabeth Quay

Good for: First visit, transport, riverside walks

Close to Perth Station and the Elizabeth Quay ferry jetty and inside the free CAT bus area. Rottnest ferries also leave from nearby Barrack Street Jetty.

Northbridge

Good for: Nightlife, museums and galleries

A lively area of small bars, street murals and eateries, home to the Perth Cultural Centre with WA Museum Boola Bardip and the Art Gallery of Western Australia.

Fremantle

Good for: History walks, markets, Rottnest ferries

A port city about 25 minutes from Perth by train. Rottnest Island is about 25 minutes away by ferry, so it's a good base before or after an island trip.

Cottesloe

Good for: Beach, Indian Ocean sunsets

Take the Fremantle Line to Cottesloe Station and walk about 600 m to the beach. Lovely at sunset.

Top sights

  1. Kings Park and Botanic Garden

    A 400-hectare city park with sweeping views of the skyline and Swan River, free to enter, showcasing more than 3,000 species of WA flora. Free volunteer-guided walks depart daily at 10am, 12pm and 2pm.

  2. Elizabeth Quay

    The city's riverside waterfront precinct. Stroll around, then take the ferry across to South Perth.

  3. WA Museum Boola Bardip

    Boola Bardip means 'many stories' in Noongar. Highlights include Otto, a 24-metre blue whale skeleton, across eight permanent galleries on WA's nature and history. Open 9:30am-5pm; check official information for fees.

  4. Fremantle Prison

    Built by convicts in the 1850s and World Heritage-listed as one of the Australian Convict Sites. Visits are by guided tour, including underground tunnels and night tours; check official information for times and fees.

  5. Fremantle Markets and the Round House

    More than 150 stalls fill an 1897 market building, open Friday to Sunday and public holiday Mondays. Nearby, the Round House is WA's oldest building, with a cannon fired daily at 1pm.

  6. Cottesloe Beach

    Perth's classic beach for swimming, surfing and Indian Ocean sunsets. Swim between the red and yellow flags when lifeguards are on patrol.

  7. Rottnest Island (Wadjemup)

    A largely car-free island with 63 beaches, 20 bays and quokkas. Ferries take about 25 minutes from Fremantle, 45 minutes from Hillarys and 90 minutes from Barrack Street Jetty in the city. An admission fee applies and is included in your ferry fare; the adult day fee is about A$21.50 (2026-27).

  8. Swan Valley (day trip)

    About 25 minutes from the city, WA's oldest wine region, first planted in 1829, with wineries, breweries and produce stops. You can even get there by river cruise from Perth.

What to eat

Western rock lobster

WA's signature seafood: no claws, but sweet flesh. Seasons and prices vary.

Fish and chips

Try fish and chips made with the day's catch around the Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour, eaten by the water.

WA prawns and seafood

Exmouth prawns, Rottnest scallops, Albany oysters and more. Perth's fish markets sell the catch of the day.

Marron

A freshwater crayfish from WA's South West, electric blue when raw and red once cooked.

Swan Valley wine

Taste wines from Perth's nearby wine region, and don't drive if you're drinking.

  1. Day 1
