Late March to early April (cherry blossoms) and mid-November to early December (autumn colors) are the most beautiful but extremely crowded, with higher hotel prices. June-July is the rainy season and July-August is very hot and humid. Winter is cold but quieter.

Ride into central Osaka, then change to a private railway for Kyoto. More changes, but convenient if you are also visiting Osaka.

Thousands of red torii gates winding up the mountain. Free; go early in the morning for fewer people.

A temple famous for its wooden stage over the hillside; paid entry. Combine it with the old Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka lanes.

A gold-leaf pavilion reflected in a pond. Paid entry with a one-way route through the gardens.

A path between towering bamboo, free to visit. Very crowded by midday, so go early.
Streets of old teahouses. Some private lanes ban entry and photography, so follow the signs.
