Chongqing Travel Guide

The only municipality in central and western China, built on mountains and partly surrounded by the Yangtze and Jialing rivers, which earns it the names "mountain city" and "city on rivers". It is famous for fiery food such as hotpot, riverside night views and cable cars across the river, and the UNESCO-listed Dazu Rock Carvings lie within reach. Ideal for lovers of night views, spicy food and dramatic, multi-level cityscapes.

When to go

Chongqing is known as a "furnace city" for its hot summers; in midsummer nights can stay near 40°C, and the highest-level red heat alerts have been issued. Big holidays such as National Day bring huge domestic crowds, so avoid them if you can. Peak-season prices at the Dazu Rock Carvings run March 1 to November 30.

Airport to the city

Metro

Check the airport's and Chongqing Rail Transit's official information for the metro line from Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport (CKG) to the city and any transfers. Also check which terminal is on your ticket.

River-crossing cableways

Cable cars over the river, such as the Yangtze River Cableway, are part of the network. Check official information for fares and hours.

Water buses and river cruises

Top sights

  1. Hongyadong

On the Jialing River, an ancient city gate site transformed into a giant suspended building with restaurants and entertainment venues — a landmark complex of stilted houses. Its night view is especially famous. It gets extremely crowded on holidays, so go on a weekday.

  2. Jiefangbei

A business area in downtown Chongqing. Together with Hongyadong it forms a national-level night-time culture and tourism cluster, making an easy evening stroll.

  3. Shancheng Alley

Built along the cliffs on the bank of the Yangtze, this was once a footpath for local residents. Many Ming and Qing-era buildings remain, and since 2018 the area has been renovated while keeping its historic character, with teahouses and a library now inside.

  4. Yangtze River Cableway

A cable car across the Yangtze with views of the shimmering river and the lit-up Yuzhong Peninsula. Check the operator's official information for fares, hours and booking.

  5. Two-river night cruises

River cruises show off the night views along the Yangtze and Jialing; queues get long on holidays. A sightseeing ferry of about 12 km from Jiulong ferry terminal to Hongyadong, passing the Yangtze River Cableway, Chaotianmen, Hongyadong and six bridges, has also been announced. Check official information for current service, times and fares.

  6. Ciqikou Ancient Town

An ancient town on the Jialing River, first built in the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127). Recent culture-and-tourism and urban-renewal work has aimed to keep its authentic old-town charm. Check official information for visitor details.

  7. Dazu Rock Carvings (day trip)

The Baodingshan, Beishan, Nanshan, Shimenshan and Shizhuanshan carvings were inscribed on the World Heritage List together on December 1, 1999. Beishan, carved from 892 onward, holds nearly 10,000 statues large and small. Baodingshan costs CNY 115 in peak season (CNY 100 off-season), with tickets sold at the Dazu Rock Carvings Visitor Center (8:30-16:30, last ticket check 16:10). Route: Jiangbei Airport T2/T3 long-distance bus station to Dazu bus station, then bus 205 or a taxi; by train, get off at Dazu South station and change to local buses.
