Chengdu vs Chongqing: Which Should You Choose for a First Trip?
Two cities famous for fiery food: Chengdu for pandas and teahouses, Chongqing for river night views and Dazu. Airports, days, weather and sights compared.

The short answer
Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province in southwest China, is famous for giant pandas, fiery, tongue-tingling Sichuan food and a relaxed teahouse culture. Historic sites like Wuhou Shrine and Du Fu Thatched Cottage sit right in the city, and day trips reach Sanxingdui and Dujiangyan.
Chongqing is the only municipality in central and western China. Built on mountains and partly surrounded by the Yangtze and Jialing rivers, it is called the 'mountain city' and the 'city on rivers', and it is famous for riverside night views, cable cars across the river and the World Heritage Dazu Rock Carvings within reach.
Best for: Chengdu suits panda fans, food lovers and slow city wanderers. Chongqing suits lovers of night views, spicy food and dramatic, multi-level cityscapes.
Airports and getting around
Chengdu has two airports: Shuangliu International (CTU) and Tianfu International (TFU), so check which one is on your ticket; Metro Line 19 links the two. From Shuangliu (CTU), Metro Line 10 runs to its city-bound terminus at Wuhou Shrine station, and the last city-bound train from T1 leaves at 23:15. After the metro closes, Night Bus 1 runs to Chunxi Road (about 2 CNY).
At Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport (CKG), check the airport's and Chongqing Rail Transit's official information for the metro line, transfers, and airport bus routes and fares, and check which terminal is on your ticket. Terminals T2 and T3 have a long-distance bus station, which is also the starting point of the route to the Dazu Rock Carvings.
Getting around feels quite different. In Chengdu most city sights are reachable by metro, with bag checks at every station, and scenic-area direct buses run from Chunxi Road and other central spots to the panda base and day-trip sights. Chongqing links mountain walking trails, river-crossing cableways, rail transit (metro and monorail), city buses, water buses and cruise routes into one multi-level network; with all its slopes and stairs, a taxi or ride-hailing app is handy when you have luggage. In both cities, showing your destination in Chinese helps.
How many days, and what it costs
The guides suggest 4 to 5 days for Chengdu and 3 to 4 days for Chongqing. Chengdu has many city sights plus places that each take their own day, such as the panda base and Sanxingdui. The Chongqing guide's plan splits into a day for the city and night views and a day trip to the Dazu Rock Carvings.
Neither guide gives a total daily budget; both list sample prices instead. Rather than calling one city cheaper, use these prices to get a feel.
- Chengdu scenic direct bus, Chunxi Road to the panda base: about 10 CNY one way
- Chengdu airport night bus: about 2 CNY
- Chengdu Wuhou Shrine: about 50 CNY
- Chengdu scenic direct bus, Chunxi Road to Sanxingdui: about 33 CNY one way
- Chongqing Dazu Baodingshan carvings: CNY 115 peak / CNY 100 off-season (peak-season prices run March 1 to November 30)
- Chongqing Dazu Beishan carvings: CNY 70 peak / CNY 50 off-season; Baodingshan + Beishan CNY 140 / 120
Weather by month, side by side
The figures below are 1991–2020 normals from the China Meteorological Administration submission · WMO normals collection (NOAA NCEI): Chengdu Wenjiang station for Chengdu and Chongqing station for Chongqing. Each line gives high/low temperature and monthly rainfall for the same month in both cities.
Chengdu's guide says spring and autumn are mild and best for walking and sightseeing; summer is hot, humid and often rainy, and winter is mostly gray and chilly.
Chongqing is known as a 'furnace city' for its hot summers. In these normals, July highs are 34°C in Chongqing and 30°C in Chengdu, and the Chongqing guide notes that the highest-level red heat alerts have been issued in midsummer.
In both cities, April and October are cooler than July. Both get very crowded over National Day (around October 1), and Chengdu also over Spring Festival, so avoid those holidays if you can.
- January: Chengdu 9°C/3°C, 8 mm; Chongqing 10°C/6°C, 21 mm
- April: Chengdu 23°C/13°C, 45 mm; Chongqing 24°C/16°C, 103 mm
- July: Chengdu 30°C/22°C, 232 mm; Chongqing 34°C/25°C, 174 mm
- October: Chengdu 21°C/15°C, 43 mm; Chongqing 22°C/17°C, 95 mm
What you'll see and eat
Chengdu is pandas, history and teahouses. Go early to the panda base, then see Wuhou Shrine, honoring Zhuge Liang and Liu Bei of the Shu Han kingdom, the red lanterns of Jinli Ancient Street next door, the revived Qing-dynasty lanes of Kuanzhai Alley, Du Fu Thatched Cottage and the teahouse in People's Park. Scenic direct buses reach Sanxingdui Museum, famous for its bronze masks, as well as Dujiangyan, Mount Qingcheng, the Leshan Giant Buddha and Mount Emei. The Jinsha Site Museum is closed from December 5, 2025 to April 30, 2027.
Chongqing is night views and rivers. The classics are Hongyadong, a landmark complex of stilted houses on the Jialing River; Jiefangbei, the downtown business area; Shancheng Alley along the Yangtze cliffs; the Yangtze River Cableway; two-river night cruises; and Ciqikou Ancient Town on the Jialing. The Dazu Rock Carvings nearby were inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1999, and Baodingshan tickets must be bought at the Dazu Rock Carvings Visitor Center, which closes at 16:30.
Both menus are spicy. Chengdu's signatures are Sichuan hotpot, mapo tofu, dan dan noodles, chuan chuan xiang and chili-oil wontons; Chongqing's are Chongqing hotpot, Chongqing xiaomian, Geleshan laziji, maoxuewang and Wanzhou grilled fish. The Chengdu guide says that saying 'wei la' (微辣, mildly spicy) when ordering gets you a gentler version.

How to choose — or do both
If pandas are the goal, or you want to take historic sights and teahouses slowly, choose Chengdu; for night views and a multi-level cityscape, Chongqing fits well. To visit both, add up the guides' trip lengths (Chengdu 4 to 5 days, Chongqing 3 to 4 days), and check official information from the transport companies for how to travel between the two cities and how long it takes.
Before you go, check these points that appear in both guides.
- Some foreign apps and services may be restricted in China: sort out your connection (roaming, eSIM, etc.) and a Chinese map app before you go
- Both guides note that foreigners can link overseas cards to Alipay and WeChat Pay; sign up and verify before you travel, and carry a little cash too
- Visa rules, including visa-free entry, change often: check official information from the Chinese embassy
- Popular sights such as the panda base may require advance booking under your passport name, and the Dazu Rock Carvings ask visitors to carry original ID

FAQ
Chengdu or Chongqing for a first visit?
Choose Chengdu for pandas, historic sights and teahouse strolls, and Chongqing for night views and a cityscape of mountains and rivers. The guides suggest 4 to 5 days for Chengdu and 3 to 4 days for Chongqing.
Which is cheaper?
Neither guide gives a total daily budget, so it is hard to say. Compare sample prices instead, such as about 50 CNY for Wuhou Shrine in Chengdu and CNY 115 in peak season for the Baodingshan carvings at Dazu near Chongqing.
Is summer OK?
In the climate normals, July highs are 30°C in Chengdu and 34°C in Chongqing. Chongqing is called a 'furnace city' and has seen red heat alerts, so for milder weather look at April or October (avoiding National Day).
Does Chengdu really have two airports?
Yes: Shuangliu International (CTU) and Tianfu International (TFU). Check which one is on your ticket; Metro Line 19 links the two.
