How to plan a panda base day

The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding (the panda base) is a world-famous panda conservation and research center. Wooded paths lead you past the panda enclosures.

Pandas are known to be most active in the morning, so the key is to go early. Day 2 of our guide's itinerary is 'the panda base early in the morning, a tea break in People's Park in the afternoon, then Kuanzhai Alley and hotpot in the evening'. This post follows that day and also shows how to swap the afternoon for Wuhou Shrine and Jinli.

Getting to the panda base

The easiest way is a scenic-area tourist bus. These buses run from Chunxi Road and other central spots to the panda base; from Chunxi Road it costs about 10 CNY one way.

Chunxi Road and Tianfu Square are where metro lines meet and the tourist buses depart, so staying nearby the night before makes the early start easier.

Taxis are metered and ride-hailing apps are widely used. Showing your destination in Chinese helps.

Booking, tickets and the best time

Popular sights such as the panda base may require advance booking under your passport name. Check official information for tickets and booking before you go, and carry your passport on the day.

Pandas are known to be most active in the morning, so arrive as early as you can. Check official information for opening hours.

Avoid Spring Festival and National Day week (around October 1), when the panda base is packed.

Afternoon in town: People's Park and Kuanzhai Alley

Back in the city, rest in People's Park. It shows Chengdu's laid-back daily life, and sipping tea in a bamboo chair here is the quintessential Chengdu experience.

In the evening, head to Kuanzhai Alley. These revived Qing-dynasty lanes have teahouses and shops between old walls and gateways, and a pleasant evening atmosphere.

Dinner is Sichuan hotpot. If you are wary of the heat, order a split pot or a milder broth, and say 'wei la' (微辣, mildly spicy) for a gentler version.

Another option: Wuhou Shrine and Jinli Ancient Street

For history, swap the afternoon for Wuhou Shrine, a shrine museum honoring Zhuge Liang and Liu Bei of the Shu Han kingdom. It is open 8:30-18:30 (ticket sales end 17:30) and costs about 50 CNY. It is a 3-minute walk from Exit A2 of Wuhou Shrine (Jinli) station on Metro Line 10.

Jinli Ancient Street next door is lined with snack and craft shops and is especially pretty when the red lanterns glow at night. Scenic-area tourist buses also run from Chunxi Road to Wuhou Shrine and Jinli.

The Jinsha Site Museum is closed until April 30, 2027, so leave it out of this trip.

When to go: monthly temperature and rainfall

Our guide says spring and autumn are mild and best for walking and sightseeing. Summer is hot, humid and often rainy, and winter is mostly gray and chilly. If you go in October, avoid National Day week (around October 1).

The figures below are Chengdu monthly averages from the WMO World Weather Information Service (China Meteorological Administration). The source does not state the period the averages cover.

The panda base means walking on wooded paths, so bring an umbrella in July and August, the wettest months.

Two airports: Shuangliu (CTU) and Tianfu (TFU)

Chengdu has a second airport, Tianfu International (TFU), besides Shuangliu (CTU). Check which airport is on your ticket. Metro Line 19 links the two. For getting from Tianfu (TFU) into the city, check official information.

From Shuangliu (CTU), Metro Line 10 runs straight to its city-bound terminus, Wuhou Shrine station. Board at Exit 04 on the T1 arrivals level (1F) or on level B2 at T2; the last city-bound train from T1 leaves at 23:15. After the metro closes, Night Bus 1 runs to Chunxi Road.

Before you go, link an overseas card to Alipay and WeChat Pay and finish sign-up and verification, and carry a little cash too. Visa rules, including visa-free entry, change often, so check official information from the Chinese embassy.
