Chengdu Travel Guide

The capital of Sichuan Province in southwest China, famous for giant pandas, fiery, tongue-tingling Sichuan food and a relaxed teahouse culture. Historic sites like Wuhou Shrine, honoring Zhuge Liang of the Three Kingdoms, and the poet Du Fu's Thatched Cottage sit right in the city, and day trips reach Sanxingdui and Dujiangyan. When to go

Spring and autumn are mild and best for walking and sightseeing. Summer is hot, humid and often rainy, and winter is mostly gray and chilly. Avoid Spring Festival and National Day week (around October 1), when the panda base and old streets are packed.

Airport to the city

Metro Line 10

At Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (CTU), board at Exit 04 on the T1 arrivals level (1F) or on level B2 at T2. The city-bound terminus is Wuhou Shrine station, right by Wuhou Shrine and Jinli, and you can change to other lines for the rest of the city. The last city-bound train from T1 leaves at 23:15.

Night Bus 1 (Airport–Chunxi Road)

Links the airport with Chunxi Road in the city center after the metro closes. It leaves the airport 21:00-04:30 every 40-70 minutes; board about 60 m south of Exit 6 on T1 arrivals, or at Platform 4 outside Exit 15 on T2 arrivals.

Taxi or ride-hailing

Taxi ranks are about 50 m south of Gate 6 on T1 arrivals and by the pedestrian crossing on T2 arrivals. Handy with heavy luggage or late arrivals; have your hotel address in Chinese.

Getting around

Metro

Most city sights are reachable by metro. Every station has bag checks, so allow extra time; transit QR codes in Alipay or WeChat Pay make it easy.

Scenic-area direct buses

Direct tourist buses run from Chunxi Road and other central spots to the panda base, Wuhou Shrine/Jinli, Kuanzhai Alley, plus Sanxingdui, Dujiangyan, Mount Qingcheng, the Leshan Giant Buddha and Mount Emei. Chunxi Road to the panda base costs about 10 CNY one way.

City buses

A dense network you can pay for by phone. Sightseeing bus routes also stop at major sights such as Wuhou Shrine.

Taxis and ride-hailing

Taxis are metered and ride-hailing apps are widely used. Showing your destination in Chinese helps.

Where to stay

Chunxi Road and Tianfu Square

Good for: First visit, shopping, transport hub

The bustling heart of the city where metro lines meet and scenic direct buses depart. The airport night bus also comes here.

Around Kuanzhai Alley

Good for: Old lanes, teahouses

Restored Qing-era lanes within walking distance of People's Park and Wenshu Monastery, with a pleasant evening atmosphere.

Around Wuhou Shrine and Jinli

Good for: Historic sights, night walks, airport access

Directly linked to the airport by Metro Line 10. Jinli's lanterns make for a lovely evening stroll.

Around Wenshu Monastery

Good for: Quiet temple area, local feel

A calm neighborhood of teahouses and lanes around an old monastery, close to the center.

Top sights

  1. Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

    The world-famous panda conservation and research center, where wooded paths lead past panda enclosures. Pandas are known to be most active in the morning, so go early. Check official information for tickets and booking.

  2. Wuhou Shrine

    A shrine museum honoring Zhuge Liang and Liu Bei of the Shu Han kingdom. Open 8:30-18:30 (ticket sales end 17:30), about 50 CNY, and a 3-minute walk from Exit A2 of Wuhou Shrine (Jinli) station on Metro Line 10.

  3. Jinli Ancient Street

    An old-style street next to Wuhou Shrine lined with snack and craft shops — especially pretty when the red lanterns glow at night.

  4. Kuanzhai Alley (Wide and Narrow Alleys)

    Revived Qing-dynasty lanes where teahouses and shops sit between old walls and gateways. It gets crowded, so mornings are calmer.

  5. Du Fu Thatched Cottage

    A garden museum on the site where Tang poet Du Fu lived, with bamboo groves and ponds for a quiet walk. Check official information for hours and fees.

  6. People's Park and its teahouse

    A city park showing Chengdu's laid-back daily life. Sipping tea in a bamboo chair here is the quintessential Chengdu experience.

  7. Wenshu Monastery

    A serene old Buddhist monastery in the city. Worshippers visit, so keep your voice down, and check official information for hours.

  8. Sanxingdui Museum (day trip)

    Famous for bronze masks and other relics of the ancient Shu civilization. A scenic direct bus runs from Chunxi Road (about 33 CNY one way); allow a full day and check official information for entry and booking.

What to eat

Sichuan hotpot

Cook meat and vegetables in a red broth loaded with chili and Sichuan pepper. If you're wary of the heat, order a split pot or a milder broth.

Mapo tofu

Sichuan's signature dish, both numbing from Sichuan pepper and spicy from chili — perfect with rice.

Dan dan noodles

A small bowl of noodles tossed in chili oil and a nutty sesame sauce, great for a light meal.

Chuan chuan xiang

Street-style hotpot of skewered ingredients cooked in spicy broth, often priced by the number of skewers.

Chili-oil wontons (hongyou chaoshou)

Silky wontons drenched in chili-oil sauce, a classic Chengdu snack; a mild clear-soup version exists too.
