A mountain city in northwestern Hunan, China, famous for the Wulingyuan scenic area (a UNESCO World Heritage site), where thousands of sandstone pillars rise like a forest, and for Tianmen Mountain with its giant natural arch. Check prices →April-May and September-October are best for hiking and views. June-August brings frequent rain, but seas of cloud often form after it clears. In winter, snow and ice can close parts of Tianmen Mountain. The May Day (around May 1) and National Day (around October 1) holidays are very crowded.

An airport bus runs to the city center. For Wulingyuan, change at a city bus station.
Use the official taxi rank or book a ride inside Alipay. Make sure the meter is on, and have your hotel address in Chinese.
Frequent buses run from the bus station next to Zhangjiajie Railway Station and elsewhere to Wulingyuan (the main gate and Forest Park gate areas). Check first and last bus times locally.
At Zhangjiajie West Station you can catch buses toward Wulingyuan, city buses or taxis. Avoid unlicensed drivers touting outside the station.
Inside the National Forest Park (Wulingyuan), eco-shuttle buses included with your ticket link the viewpoints. The Bailong Elevator and cable cars need separate tickets.
Handy for short hops between the city and stations. Ride-hailing can be booked inside Alipay, and showing your destination in Chinese helps.

The Tianmen Mountain cableway starts right in town, close to the railway station, bus station and airport.
Good for: National Forest Park, Huanglong Cave, multi-day hiking
The gateway town, convenient for spending several days in the park, with plenty of places to eat.

A village by the park's southern entrance, good for an early start on Golden Whip Stream.
Good for: High-speed rail, Fenghuang day trip
The area around the high-speed rail station, handy for early trains or late arrivals.

See the sandstone pillars that look like floating mountains from the movies, plus a natural stone bridge. Viewpoints get crowded, so go early.
A high plateau with endless views over the peak forest; on cloudy days the pillars rise above the clouds. A cable car runs up and down.
A flat trail of just over 7 km along a stream between the peaks. Few steps, so it pairs well with the mountaintop routes.
An outdoor elevator built onto the cliff that whisks you up to Yuanjiajie. Queues are long in peak season; check official information for fares.
Ride a long cable car up from the city. Highlights are the cliffside glass skywalk, the switchback mountain road and the huge Tianmen Cave arch at the top of 999 steps. Some sections may close in bad weather.
A glass-floored bridge high over a deep canyon, famous for its dizzying views. It is close to Wulingyuan; check official information for booking and opening.
A vast limestone cave in Wulingyuan with stalactites and an underground waterway — a good rainy-day plan.
An old riverside town lined with wooden houses, around an hour by high-speed rail from Zhangjiajie West; check official timetables. Allow a full day or stay a night.
A Tujia dry pot of offal and meat cooked with radish, tofu and more — Zhangjiajie's signature dish, spicy and rich.
Pork cured over smoke for a deep flavor, stir-fried with vegetables or steamed.
Smoked meats and sausage steamed together — salty and great with rice.
Translucent noodles or cakes made from kudzu-root starch, stir-fried with smoked pork — a local favorite.
Hunan-style rice noodles, a common breakfast, topped with spicy garnishes.

Airport to the city, check in, Tianmen Mountain (cable car, glass skywalk, Tianmen Cave), then sanxiaguo for dinner.
Bus to Wulingyuan, enter the National Forest Park, Bailong Elevator up to Yuanjiajie, shuttle to Tianzi Mountain, cable car down, night in Wulingyuan town.
Re-enter on the same ticket, walk Golden Whip Stream, then Huanglong Cave or the Grand Canyon Glass Bridge in the afternoon.
High-speed rail from Zhangjiajie West to Fenghuang for the day (or overnight), back to the city in the evening and on to the airport.
