Late March-April (cherry blossoms) and October-November (autumn leaves) are best. Oysters are in season in winter (roughly November-February). June to early July is the rainy season, July-August is hot and humid, and typhoons in August-September can stop ferries and flights.

Take the airport bus to a nearby station and change to JR. A bit more complex, but useful with a rail pass.

The streetcar links Hiroshima Station, the Atomic Bomb Dome, Hatchobori and Miyajimaguchi — the backbone of city travel. IC transit cards work.
About 30 minutes from Hiroshima Station to Miyajimaguchi, handy for Miyajima.
About 10 minutes from Miyajimaguchi port to the island. A visitor tax applies on entry, so check official information.
A sightseeing bus circles the main sights, and the Peace Park and Hatchobori areas are easy on foot.

A park remembering the 1945 atomic bombing and the dome, a World Heritage site. It is a place of remembrance — please be quiet and respectful.

Exhibits on the bombing and peace. The photos and belongings can be heavy going, and it gets crowded, so go early. Check official information for hours.
The World Heritage shrine with the famous red torii in the sea. The scene changes with the tides, so check tide times officially.

Miyajima's highest peak with views over the Seto Inland Sea islands. Combine the ropeway with walking.
A moated castle, good with a park stroll. The 1958 reconstructed keep closed on March 22, 2026 due to aging, so it can now only be viewed from outside. Check official information for the grounds and the restored Ninomaru buildings.

Shipbuilding and naval history in the port city of Kure, famous for its huge battleship model. About 40-50 minutes by JR from Hiroshima.
A seaside town of hillside lanes, temples and cat alleys, also a starting point for a famous cycling route.
Batter, cabbage, noodles and meat layered and grilled — Hiroshima's way. Best eaten at the griddle counter.
Hiroshima is famous for oysters, in season in winter — grilled, fried or steamed.
