How many days do you need in Hiroshima? 3 to 4

Hiroshima is a city where the Peace Memorial Park and the Atomic Bomb Dome invite reflection, with Miyajima's famous floating torii an easy day trip away. It is compact, and the guide suggests 3 to 4 days.

Spend the first day at the Peace Memorial Park in the city, the second on Miyajima, and the third at the Peace Memorial Museum, Hiroshima Castle and Shukkeien before a trip out to Kure or Onomichi. Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki and oysters are not to be missed.

Airport to the city: limousine bus, bus plus JR, or taxi

Hiroshima Airport (HIJ) sits on hills well east of the city. The limousine bus to Hiroshima Station is the easiest option: about 45-55 minutes for about 1,400-1,500 JPY. Hiroshima Station is the hub for the airport limousine, JR and streetcars, which makes it a good base for a first trip.

With a rail pass, you can instead take the airport bus to Shiraichi Station (about 15 minutes) and change to JR (about 45 minutes). With the transfer it takes roughly 1 hour to 1 hour 20 minutes and is a bit more complex. The fare is bus plus JR combined, so check official fares.

A taxi takes about 45-60 minutes to the city and is expensive because of the distance, so it is only worth it for groups with lots of luggage. On departure day, check the limousine schedule in advance and leave with plenty of time.

Getting around: streetcar, JR and the Miyajima ferry

The streetcar is the backbone of city travel, linking Hiroshima Station, the Atomic Bomb Dome, Hatchobori and Miyajimaguchi. One IC transit card covers streetcars, buses and JR. Rail pass conditions change, so check official information.

For Miyajima, take JR from Hiroshima Station to Miyajimaguchi (about 30 minutes), then the ferry from Miyajimaguchi port (about 10 minutes). A visitor tax applies when entering the island; check the amount and how to pay on official information.

A loop sightseeing bus circles the main sights, and the Peace Park and Hatchobori areas are easy on foot. The Kure Maritime Museum is about 40-50 minutes by JR from Hiroshima Station.

Where to stay: neighbourhoods and daily budget

For a first visit, the area around Hiroshima Station is easiest, with the airport limousine, JR and streetcars all stopping there. For nightlife, Hatchobori and Hondori form the city center with shopping arcades, restaurants and okonomiyaki spots, lively at night. Around the Peace Memorial Park there are quiet riverside hotels, great for morning walks.

On Miyajima island, evenings and early mornings after the day-trippers leave are special, but there are few places to stay, so book early. Miyajimaguchi, the mainland port for the island ferries, has more reasonable prices than the island.

Daily budgets per person: about 8,000 JPY with a business hotel, okonomiyaki and the streetcar; about 15,000-20,000 JPY with a city hotel, restaurants and a Miyajima round trip; about 35,000 JPY+ with a Miyajima ryokan and set-course dinners.

When to go: late March-April blossoms, October-November leaves

The best times are late March-April for cherry blossoms and October-November for autumn leaves. Oysters are in season in winter (roughly November-February). June to early July is the rainy season, July-August is hot and humid, and typhoons in August-September can stop ferries and flights.

Average temperatures: March highs of 15°C and lows of 5°C, April 20°C and 10°C, October 24°C and 15°C, November 18°C and 9°C. August is the hottest at 33°C and 25°C, and January sits at 10°C and 2°C. July is the wettest month with 280mm, June also gets 227mm, and January is the driest at 46mm.

Etiquette, Miyajima tides and entry checks

The Peace Memorial Park, the Atomic Bomb Dome and the Peace Memorial Museum remember the 1945 atomic bombing and are places of remembrance. Visit quietly and avoid playful photos at the memorials. The museum gets crowded, so go early, and check official information for hours.

Miyajima's torii at Itsukushima Shrine stands in the sea at high tide and can be approached on foot at low tide. Check official tide times and plan around them. Do not feed the island's deer; they may go after paper, maps and food, so keep bags closed.

Hiroshima Castle's 1958 reconstructed keep closed on March 22, 2026 due to aging, so it can now only be viewed from outside. Check official information for the grounds and the restored Ninomaru buildings. Shukkeien Garden is a quiet break in the city center. Entry procedures and online arrival forms can change, so check Japanese government or embassy information before you travel.
