How the three cities differ
All three are close to Korea. Straight-line distances from Incheon are about 900 km to Beijing, 820 km to Shanghai and 580 km to Qingdao. Check flights from Incheon and Busan (Gimhae) and recent fares on the route pages below.
Each has a clear character. Beijing is a history trip to grand sites like the Forbidden City and the Great Wall; Shanghai is a city break of riverside night views, old lanes and food; Qingdao is a short seaside trip of coastal walks, seafood and beer.
Beijing — the Forbidden City and the Great Wall
China's capital gathers landmark sites: the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, the Temple of Heaven and the Summer Palace. Give the Great Wall a full day, and explore the hutong alleys by bike or look over the Forbidden City's roofs from Jingshan Park.
Major sights such as the Forbidden City require advance real-name booking with your passport and often sell out. Check how to book before you go.
From Capital Airport (PEK), take the Capital Airport Express to Sanyuanqiao or Dongzhimen and change to the subway; check journey times and fares on official sources. Taxi times vary a lot with traffic. September-October is clear and mild, the best time; April-May is good but can bring dust. Summers are hot and rainy and winters very cold.
Best for: travelers who want grand historic sites and have four or five days.
Shanghai — the Bund at night and old lanes
China's largest city, where the European-style Bund faces the skyscrapers of Lujiazui across the Huangpu River. The Bund after dark, Yu Garden, the lanes of Tianzifang and walks in the former French Concession are the classics, and the former site of the Korean Provisional Government is here too.
Try Shanghai favorites like xiaolongbao and crispy-bottomed shengjianbao. The canal town of Zhujiajiao is about an hour away by metro.
From Pudong Airport (PVG), the Maglev reaches Longyang Road in about 8 minutes, where you change to the metro for downtown. Metro Line 2 runs straight in without a change but takes longer (check official journey times). April-May and October-November are best; June to early July is the rainy season, and July-August is hot and humid with possible typhoons.
Best for: short trips focused on night views, old lanes and food — three or four days.

Qingdao — seaside old town and beer
A seaside city on the Shandong Peninsula, known for red-roofed European-style streets, coastal promenades, seafood and draft beer. Zhanqiao Pier, the lookout on Signal Hill, the old villas of Badaguan and May Fourth Square at night are the highlights, and with a full day you can visit Laoshan, where the mountains meet the sea.
Seafood is often priced by weight, so confirm the unit price and cooking fees before ordering.
Jiaodong Airport (TAO) is a long way north of the city. Since Metro Line 8 fully opened in September 2026, it runs to May Fourth Square without a change, taking about 40 minutes on the fastest trains (check Qingdao Metro's official timetable). May-June and September-October are best; July-August is crowded with beachgoers. Spring can bring sea fog or dust, and winter sea winds are cold.
Best for: a relaxed weekend of sea, seafood and beer — three or four days.

Before you go to China
Google, YouTube, Instagram, KakaoTalk and similar services are often inaccessible on local networks in China. Check with your carrier or eSIM provider's official information whether roaming or an international eSIM will work, and use a Chinese map app for the most accurate maps.
Mobile payment is more common than cash. Foreigners can link overseas cards to Alipay and WeChat Pay, so sign up and verify before you travel.
Visa rules, including visa-free entry, change often. Check the latest rules with the Chinese embassy before you travel.
- Some sights need advance booking under your passport name, and you must show your passport on entry
- There are security checks at every metro station and major sight — do not carry lighters or knives
- At airports, take taxis only from the official rank and make sure the meter is on; have your hotel address in Chinese
- Do not follow friendly strangers to tea houses or art shows at tourist sights
