The big picture: two days in town, then the sea
The guide suggests 3 to 4 days in Tianjin. This route packs 2 nights and 3 days: Ancient Culture Street and the Haihe River on day 1, the Five Great Avenues and Yangliuqing Ancient Town on day 2, and the National Maritime Museum in Binhai New Area on day 3. If you can stay one more day, a 3-night, 4-day version adds Jizhou in the north.
Metro Line 2 is the backbone of the city route. Line 2 alone links the airport, Tianjin Railway Station, the Italian Style Town (Jianguodao Yifengqu station) and Dongnanjiao and Gulou stations near Ancient Culture Street. Century Clock Square by Tianjin Railway Station, Jiefang Bridge, the Italian Style Town across the river and the Tianjin Eye on Yongle Bridge are all easy to see on a riverside walk.
The guide's day 3 is a day trip to Jizhou, with Binhai New Area as the choice if you would rather see the sea. Here day 3 goes to Binhai, and Jizhou moves to day 4 of the longer version, because Jizhou is far from the city and needs a full day.
Day 1: Airport → Ancient Culture Street → Haihe River → Tianjin Eye
Tianjin Binhai International Airport (TSN) is in Dongli District, about 13 km from the city centre. Metro Line 2 starts at the airport station and calls at Tianjin Railway Station, Jianguodao Yifengqu (Italian Style Town), Dongnanjiao and Gulou, among others. A ride costs up to CNY 5; trains toward the airport run 06:00–22:55 and toward Caozhuang 06:00–22:54 (first to last train). Hours can change, so check the metro's official notices.
Start at Ancient Culture Street and the Tianhou Temple. This old street on the west bank of the Haihe River grew with the waterborne trade and is called "the Cradle of Tianjin". At its heart is the Tianhou Temple, dedicated to Mazu, Goddess of the Sea, and among the Ming- and Qing-style buildings are shops selling Tianjin crafts such as Yangliuqing New Year prints and Niren Zhang clay figurines, good for souvenirs.
Then follow the Haihe River to Century Clock Square and Jiefang Bridge, built in 1927, and cross to the Italian Style Town. Its 137 historic buildings around Marco Polo Square are being preserved and restored, and there are over 30 former homes of modern public figures such as Liang Qichao. At dusk, ride the Tianjin Eye on Yongle Bridge (110 m across, about 120 m high, 30 minutes per turn). At night its lights reflect on the river.

Day 2: Jianbing guozi → Five Great Avenues → Yangliuqing → Golden Street
Start with jianbing guozi, Tianjin's signature breakfast: a thin mung bean flour pancake topped with egg, Tianjin sweet bean sauce, fermented tofu paste and scallions, rolled around a crispy fried sheet of dough or a soft fried dough stick.
In the morning, walk the Five Great Avenues in Heping District, where 436 historic Western-style buildings have earned the nickname "exposition of buildings from around the world". Next, Jiefang North Road by the Haihe River, the old banking street once called "the Wall Street of the East", is lined with bank buildings over a hundred years old.
In the afternoon, head to Yangliuqing Ancient Town on the Grand Canal in Xiqing District. The Shi Family Grand Courtyard, built in 1875, is a Qing-era residence famed for its brick carvings, and the town is the home of Yangliuqing woodblock New Year prints, national intangible cultural heritage since 2006, so the guide's route includes trying woodblock printing. Check official information for transport from the city. In the evening, stroll Golden Street, the pedestrian shopping street in Heping District.
Day 3: The sea and the National Maritime Museum in Binhai
On day 3, go to Binhai New Area on the eastern coast. It is a large district with 153 km of coastline, about an hour's drive from downtown. Check official information for local transport.
The National Maritime Museum of China, the country's first national maritime museum, has a building that reaches from the land out into the sea and covers the long history of the oceans. Check official information for opening hours and booking. Binhai New Area also has Dongjiang Bay Beach and a cruise home port.
Make it a seafood day. Pipixia guotie, a Binhai treat, packs three whole mantis shrimp into each thin wrapper, and in Binhai breakfast can mean fried shrimp, yellow croaker and beltfish wrapped in thin pancakes. Badacha, the fishermen's method of simmering seafood over low heat and eating it cooled, became Tianjin municipal intangible cultural heritage in 2013.
One more day (3 nights, 4 days): a Jizhou day trip
Jizhou District is Tianjin's mountainous far north. The guide's route visits the Guanyin Pavilion at Dule Temple, then either Panshan or the Huangyaguan Great Wall. The pavilion, rebuilt in 984 (Liao dynasty), is one of the oldest surviving wooden pavilions in China.
Panshan, "the First Mountain East of Beijing", is a national 5A scenic area that Qing emperor Qianlong visited 32 times. Huangyaguan is a Ming-dynasty section of the Great Wall. Check official information for admission and opening hours.
Jizhou is far from the city, so set aside a full day. From the airport, coaches to the Jizhou city air terminal leave from inside Gate 8 on the Terminal 2 ground floor (arrivals level), six times a day from 10:30 to 20:30, for CNY 50. Same-day notices apply. Check official information for getting there from the city and for local transport.

Where to stay and getting around, including late arrivals
For a first visit, Heping District is the easy choice: Tianjin's commercial centre for more than a century, with the Five Great Avenues, Golden Street and Jiefang North Road. For historic streets, night views and traditional crafts, pick Hebei District, home to the Italian Style Town, or the old town area of Nankai District with the Drum Tower, Ancient Culture Street, the Tianhou Temple and the Confucius Temple; Metro Line 2 makes both easy to get around. Binhai New Area suits the sea, museums and seafood, but it is about an hour's drive from downtown.
Airport Metro Line 2 stops running around 22:55. If you land late, the late-night airport bus runs every 30 minutes from 23:00 until the day's flights end. Board outside Gate 5 under the bridge at Terminal 2; fares are CNY 15 to Tianjin Railway Station and other stops and CNY 20 to Tianjin West Station. Service depends on that day's flights, so call 022-24906296 first.
- Airport Line 4 bus: to the Wanxincun South stop, 14 airport departures a day from 07:10 to 20:40, CNY 2
- From 24 July 2026 most airport terminal doors close 00:00–04:00. During those hours use Gate 7 at Terminal 2 (departures and arrivals levels)
- Tianjin Railway Station (Laolongtou) sits on the Haihe River, and Beijing is about 120 km away. Check the railway's official information for tickets and times
