Otaru and Sapporo in One Day: Which Order Works Best?
Two ways to pair Otaru and Sapporo in one day, with JR and highway bus links, walking routes and timing tips.

Published
The basics: getting between the two cities
Otaru is a port city 30-40 minutes from Sapporo by train, which is why so many travelers base themselves in Sapporo and visit Otaru as a day trip. The fastest JR trains take about 32 minutes, and JR trains to Otaru leave from Sapporo Station.
If you prefer the bus, Chuo Bus runs Highway Otaru buses for about 730 JPY one way. Check the official source for JR fares and train and bus timetables.
Kitaca and national IC cards such as Suica work on JR between Otaru, Sapporo and New Chitose Airport, so you don't need to buy separate tickets. Bus payment options can change, so check local signs.
Order A: Sapporo in the morning, Otaru in the afternoon and evening
The gas lamps along Otaru Canal are lit from sunset to midnight. If you want the canal at dusk to be the last scene of your day, this order works well.
Start with a seafood rice bowl breakfast at Nijo Market, take a quick look at the Clock Tower and Odori Park, then ride JR from Sapporo Station to Otaru. Walk Sakaimachi street and Märchen Crossing in the afternoon, stroll the gas-lit canal once the sun goes down, and head back to Sapporo.
The catch is that Sakaimachi street gets very crowded at midday. If crowds bother you, consider Order B.
- Morning: seafood bowl at Nijo Market, Clock Tower, Odori Park
- Around midday: JR from Sapporo Station to Otaru (about 32 min at fastest)
- Afternoon: Sakaimachi street and Märchen Crossing, then Otaru Canal
- Evening: gas-lit canal walk, including the North Canal, then back to Sapporo
Order B: Otaru in the morning, Sapporo in the afternoon and night
Sakaimachi street is crowded at midday, so mornings are better. In this order you head to Otaru early, walk the street while it's quiet, see the canal and return to Sapporo around lunchtime.
In Otaru, have a seafood rice bowl as brunch or try ankake yakisoba, often called Otaru's soul food. Back in Sapporo, see Odori Park and the TV Tower in the afternoon, then finish with the Mt Moiwa night view or miso ramen in Susukino.
You miss the canal's gas lamps, but you get a quieter Otaru plus a Sapporo night view. The Mt Moiwa ropeway may stop in bad weather, so check conditions on the day.

- Early: JR from Sapporo Station to Otaru
- Morning: Sakaimachi street and Märchen Crossing, then Otaru Canal
- Lunch: seafood bowl or ankake yakisoba, then JR back to Sapporo
- Afternoon: Odori Park and the TV Tower (paid observation deck)
- Night: Mt Moiwa night view, or miso ramen in Susukino (about 900-1,300 JPY a bowl)
Getting around Otaru on foot
The canal is about a 10-minute walk from Otaru Station, and the canal, Sakaimachi street and the old bank district are close together, so the center is easy on foot. Sakaimachi street is also walkable from JR Minami-Otaru Station, so check a map and pick the station that suits your route.
Otaru Canal was completed in 1923 and is about 1,140 m long, with a walkway lined with stone warehouses and 63 gas lamps. Also walk the North Canal, which keeps more of its original look.
With spare time, add the Former Temiya Line walking path (about 1.6 km, about 15 minutes' walk from Otaru Station) or the Bank of Japan Otaru Museum, which has free admission, closes on Wednesdays (open if a holiday) and has seasonal opening hours. Railway fans can visit the Otaru City General Museum Main Building (9:30-17:00, closed Tuesdays, about 400 JPY, about 300 JPY in winter).
- Mt Tengu Ropeway: about 20 minutes by bus from Otaru Station plus about 5 minutes by ropeway, famous for its night view (check the official source for hours and fares)
- City buses: about 240 JPY per ride in the flat-fare zone; the Otaru city bus one-day pass is about 800 JPY and pays off with four or more rides
- Otaru Aquarium and the Herring Mansion in Shukutsu are reached by bus and can make a one-day plan tight
Getting around Sapporo
Three subway lines (Namboku, Tozai and Toho) link Sapporo Station, Odori and Susukino and are the backbone of city travel; IC cards work. You can also walk underground from Sapporo Station to Odori and Susukino, which is a lifesaver in cold or rainy weather.
The Clock Tower is smaller than many expect, so treat it as a quick stop. On a two-city day, staying along the Sapporo Station, Odori and Susukino axis saves time. For Mt Moiwa, the streetcar runs near the ropeway.

Timing and what to check
The two things that shape this day are when you leave Otaru and when the sun sets. Sunset times change with the seasons, so check the official source for your travel date, and look up return JR and bus timetables in advance.
From December to March, sidewalks are icy and very slippery, which slows you down. Wear shoes with non-slip soles, bring gloves and a hat, and leave slack in the plan. The Herring Mansion closes in winter and the aquarium has a winter season and a closed period, so check official information before you go.
In February, the Otaru Snow Light Path festival lights the canal and an old railway line with snow candles (February 6-13 in 2027). If you visit then, Order A lets you spend the evening in Otaru. Big bags are a burden on a walking day, so leave them at your hotel or use a luggage storage service.
Starting from the airport, or staying a night
From New Chitose Airport Station, the JR Rapid Airport train takes about 40 minutes to Sapporo Station (about 1,100-1,300 JPY) and about 1 hour 15 minutes to Otaru (about 73 minutes at fastest). Some trains run through to Otaru and others need a change at Sapporo, so check the timetable.
If one day feels too tight, consider staying a night in Otaru. You get the canal in the quiet evening and early morning, then take JR to Sapporo or the airport the next day.
