Short answer: walk the city-centre sites by day

We recommend Gyeongju's city centre (Daereungwon, Cheomseongdae, Gyochon) for a first visit and for walking the heritage sites. Cheomseongdae, Daereungwon and Donggung Palace sit close together in the centre, so they are easy to see on foot.

This post covers the day, from morning to late afternoon. The evening night-view route and the 2-day plan with Bulguksa are in separate posts below. Per Gyeongju City, a day trip is possible; 2 days give a relaxed pace.

Starting point: the Wolseong-dong Community Centre stop on bus 10

The day walk is easiest to start from the Wolseong-dong Community Centre stop on bus 10. From there it is a 5–7 minute walk to Cheomseongdae and Daereungwon and 8–10 minutes to Donggung Palace. Allow plenty of time for walking between the other sites.

Bus 10 runs from the terminal via Cheomseongdae, Bunhwangsa and Bomun Lake Resort to Bulguksa, then back via Tongiljeon, Gyeongju National Museum and Donggung Palace. Bus 11 runs the same loop the other way. First bus 06:00, last 21:40 (from the terminal), about every 20 minutes. City bus fares are flat regardless of distance: KRW 1,300 for regular buses and KRW 1,700 for seat buses, with KRW 50 off when you pay by transit card.

If you arrive by KTX or SRT, several city bus routes stop at Gyeongju Station (formerly Singyeongju). Route numbers and times can change, so check the Gyeongju traffic information centre (its.gyeongju.go.kr) or the station's tourist information centre (054-771-1336).

Morning: Daereungwon and Cheonmachong, then Cheomseongdae

Start at Daereungwon, the tombs of Silla kings, queens and nobles, part of the Gyeongju Historic Areas listed by UNESCO in 2000. Cheonmachong, excavated in 1973, is the only tomb with its interior open to visitors. Daereungwon is free; Cheonmachong costs KRW 3,000 for adults. Check opening hours for Daereungwon and Cheonmachong in the official information before you go.

Next, walk to Cheomseongdae, an observatory about 9 m tall from the reign of Queen Seondeok (632–647), built of 365 stones. It is free and opens at 09:00. It closes at 22:00 in summer and 21:00 in winter, so on a daytime walk there is no rush.

Midday: Gyochon Village and Woljeonggyo Bridge

After Cheomseongdae, head to Gyochon Village, a hanok village with the house of the Gyeongju Choi clan, who kept their wealth for 12 generations. It is open 24 hours and free. Check the walking time from Cheomseongdae to Gyochon on a map in advance.

Woljeonggyo Bridge is right next to Gyochon. It recreates the bridge that linked Wolseong and Namsan in 760; completed in April 2018, it is Korea's largest wooden bridge. It is open 09:00–22:00 and free. As it sits next to the village, see the two together.

Afternoon: Gyeongju National Museum, and Donggung Palace by day

In the afternoon, see artefacts of Silla (57 BC–AD 935) at Gyeongju National Museum, in the Silla History Gallery and Silla Art Gallery. It is free except paid special exhibitions, and open 10:00–18:00 on weekdays and 10:00–19:00 on weekends and holidays. It is closed on 1 January, Seollal and Chuseok days, and the first Monday of March and November, so check the date.

Check the walking time from Gyochon to the museum on a map too. Buses 10 and 11 pass Gyeongju National Museum, so take the bus if you would rather not walk. Check your stop and direction with the Gyeongju traffic information centre.

Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond is rated Gyeongju's top night-view spot, but it opens at 09:00. It was a secondary palace where the crown prince lived and banquets were held; King Munmu dug the pond with three islands in 674. Admission is KRW 3,000 for adults. If you plan to come back for the night view, you can skip it during the day.

Flowers along the route by season

Gyeongju City lists flower spots for each season, and several of them are on this day walk. Bloom dates vary from year to year, so check the flower calendar and cherry blossom alert on the city tourism site.

Some flower spots are off this route. In spring, the Bomun Lake path cherry blossoms are at Bomun Lake Resort, which bus 10 passes, and the Bulguksa cherry blossoms are at Bulguksa, where buses 10 and 11 turn around. The summer lotus at Yangdong Village is also off this route. For the autumn cosmos along the Hwangnyongsa path, check the location and how to get there in Gyeongju City's information.

Budget and checklist before you go

On this day walk, Daereungwon, Cheomseongdae, Gyochon, Woljeonggyo and the National Museum are free. The paid sites are Cheonmachong and Donggung Palace (KRW 3,000 each for adults), and a bus ride costs KRW 1,300 (KRW 50 off with a transit card). For a snack break, try Gyeongju bread, first made around Hwangnam-dong in 1939.

Check the official forecast before you go, and wear comfortable shoes for a full day on foot. Tourist helpline 1330; KTX Gyeongju Station tourist information centre 054-771-1336. Entry rules for Korea depend on your nationality, so check official Korean government information before you travel.
