What the two islands have in common

Guam and Saipan are both US islands in the western Pacific, just over four hours from Incheon by air. Straight-line distances from Incheon are similar: about 3,230 km to Guam and 3,130 km to Saipan. Check exact flight times and recent fares on the route pages below.

Both are hot with strong sun all year. The dry season from around December to May or June is usually clear, while July to November brings more rain and possible typhoons. Chamorro barbecue, red rice and kelaguen are on the menu on both islands.

Guam — easy to get around, shopping and family trips

Tumon's hotel area is only about 10-15 minutes from the airport, and resorts, malls and restaurants line Tumon Beach within walking distance. The shallow, calm water inside the reef is ideal for children.

There are plenty of malls and outlets, and a tourist shuttle bus links the main sights. Two Lovers Point, Plaza de España and the southern coastal drive are also popular.

Best for: a first beach trip with young children, travelers who want shopping too, and anyone who would rather not drive.

Saipan — quiet water and island outings

Quieter than Guam, Saipan's signature trip is snorkeling in the clear water of Managaha Island, about 15 minutes by boat. Micro Beach sunsets, the Bird Island lookout and Pacific War sites are also worth a visit.

There is almost no public transport, so people get around by rental car, taxi or hotel shuttle. Day trips to neighboring Tinian exist, but check whether services are running first.

Best for: travelers who want to unwind on uncrowded beaches, snorkelers and island-hoppers, and those happy to drive.

Saipan is recovering from Super Typhoon Sinlaku (April 2026), and flights are reduced. Check whether sights, hotels and tours are operating with the Marianas Visitors Authority and other official sources before you go.

Side by side

Choose by the kind of trip you want. Four or five days suits either island.

Stay safe in the water

Many beaches on both islands have no lifeguards. Stay out when waves and currents are strong, and wear a life jacket when snorkeling. Reefs and rocks make water shoes useful — and please do not step on the coral.

Check before you go

As US islands, Guam and Saipan have their own entry rules (such as travel authorization). Check entry requirements and emergency contact information with the US government or the US Embassy before you travel. Typhoons from July to November can stop flights and boats, so leave slack in your plans and read your travel insurance's cancellation and delay cover.
