How many days for Sendai? 3 days, or 4 with day trips
Sendai is the largest city in Tohoku, nicknamed the 'City of Trees' for its zelkova-lined avenues. It pairs well with Date Masamune's castle site and mausoleum, Matsushima, one of Japan's Three Scenic Views, and nearby hot-spring villages. The guide suggests 3 to 4 days (2 to 3 nights).
Spend the first day on the city sights by Loople bus, the second in Matsushima and the third at Yamadera or a hot spring. Day trips all start from Sendai Station by JR train or bus, so it is easiest to stay near Sendai Station and travel out and back.
- Day 1: Airport Access Line to Sendai Station → check in → Loople bus to the Sendai Castle site and Zuihoden → gyutan dinner in Ichibancho
- Day 2: JR Senseki Line to Matsushima → Zuiganji and Godaido → bay cruise → oysters → evening walk on Jozenji-dori
- Day 3: day trip to Yamadera on the JR Senzan Line (stone steps) → Sakunami Onsen on the way back, or a night at Akiu Onsen
- Day 4: Osaki Hachimangu → zunda mochi and sasakamaboko souvenirs → Access Line to the airport (leave plenty of time)
Airport to the city: the Sendai Airport Access Line is fastest
From Sendai Airport (SDJ), the Sendai Airport Access Line is the most popular way into the city. Trains run from Sendai Airport Station straight to JR Sendai Station with no transfer: about 17 minutes by rapid, about 25 minutes by local. The fare is about 660 JPY, and IC cards such as icsca and Suica are accepted. IC card fares may differ slightly.
A taxi is an option if you have lots of luggage or arrive late. It takes about 40 minutes to the city, longer than the train, and uses a metered fare, so check official information. If you plan to drive to Matsushima, Akiu Onsen or Yamadera, picking up a rental car at the airport is convenient. It is about 40 minutes to the city, and prices vary by company and car.
On your way home, take the Access Line again. As the guide's itinerary suggests, leave plenty of time.
- Airport Access Line: about 17 min (rapid), about 25 min (local), about 660 JPY (IC card fares may differ slightly)
- Taxi: about 40 min to the city, metered fare (check official information)
- Rental car: about 40 min to the city, price varies by company and car
Getting around: subway, Loople Sendai and JR trains
The subway has 2 lines: the north-south Namboku Line and the east-west Tozai Line, meeting at Sendai Station and linking downtown with the main districts.
For sightseeing, the Loople Sendai loop bus is handy. It leaves the Sendai Station West Exit bus terminal and circles the Sendai Castle site, Zuihoden, Osaki Hachimangu and more; a full loop takes about 70 minutes. Zuihoden is about a 5-minute walk from the Loople bus stop. One-day passes, including a combined subway pass, are available; check official information for fares.
Day trips go by JR train: the Senseki Line reaches Matsushima in about 40 minutes and the Senzan Line reaches Yamadera in about 1 hour 10 minutes. icsca and national IC cards such as Suica work on the subway, city buses, JR lines and the Airport Access Line, but icsca cannot be used outside the Sendai area.

- Subway: Namboku and Tozai lines (2 lines), centered on Sendai Station
- Loople Sendai: full loop about 70 min; check one-day pass fares officially
- JR Senseki Line: about 40 min to Matsushima
- JR Senzan Line: about 1 hour 10 min to Yamadera, also toward Sakunami Onsen
- Akiu Onsen: about 50 min by bus from Sendai Station
Where to stay: neighborhoods and daily budget
On a first visit, the area around Sendai Station is the easiest base. The airport line, Shinkansen, subway and Loople bus all meet here, which makes day trips simple. Ichibancho and Kokubuncho have covered shopping arcades, restaurants and bars within walking distance of the station. Around Jozenji-dori, a zelkova-lined avenue runs for about 700 m with a promenade down the middle.
For a night at a hot spring, Akiu Onsen is known as Sendai's retreat. Matsushima works as a day trip or an overnight stay.
Per person per day, budget about 7,000 JPY for a business hotel, simple meals and the subway; about 14,000-20,000 JPY for a city hotel, gyutan set meals and day-trip trains; and about 35,000 JPY or more for a hot-spring ryokan and set-course dinners.

- Around Sendai Station: transport, first visit
- Ichibancho and Kokubuncho: dining, shopping, nightlife
- Around Jozenji-dori: strolls, winter illuminations
- Akiu Onsen: hot-spring ryokan, quiet rest
- Daily budget: about 7,000 / 14,000-20,000 / 35,000+ JPY
When to go: spring cherry blossoms and cool autumn foliage
Spring cherry blossoms and cool autumn with its foliage are the best times to explore. From August 6 to 8, the Sendai Tanabata Festival fills the downtown arcades with colorful decorations, but rooms book up fast. Winter brings illuminations along Jozenji-dori, while the surrounding mountains get snow and cold.
In spring, April averages a high of 16°C and a low of 6°C, and May 20°C and 12°C. In autumn, October averages 20°C and 12°C, and November 14°C and 6°C. Good to know: festival rooms, winter snow, onsen etiquette and entry
If you visit during the Tanabata Festival (August 6-8), book your room early. Check official information for fireworks and other events.
In winter, Yamadera's stone steps and the surrounding mountains can be snowy and icy. Wear non-slip shoes and check whether your rental car has winter tires. If you drive, bring an International Driving Permit and remember Japan drives on the left. At Yamadera, allow around 1 hour 30 minutes to climb the more than 1,000 stone steps and come back down.
At hot springs, wash before entering the bath; some facilities restrict guests with tattoos. Earthquakes are common in the region, so read your hotel's evacuation information once. Entry procedures and online arrival forms can change, so check Japanese government or embassy information before you travel.
