Yanji in 4 days with one day at Changbai Mountain: markets, the Yanbian University street, the mountain by high-speed train, Mao'ershan and the Folk Village.
Published · Updated
The big picture: the city plus one mountain day
Four to five days suits Yanji, including a day at Changbai Mountain (Baekdusan). This plan follows the guide's 4-day route: markets and the Yanbian University street on day 1, Changbai Mountain on day 2, Mao'ershan and the China Korean Folk Village on day 3, and food shopping before the airport on the last day.
The city center (West Market and Burhatong River) is a convenient base for everything. Around Yanbian University suits a first visit focused on photos and evening food, and around Yanji West Station is handy if you plan to take an early train to Changbai Mountain, though food and sights are better in the center. If you want to be on the mountain early, you can also stay a night in Chibei District, the gateway area to the North Scenic Area.
If you haven't decided between the North and West Slopes yet, read the comparison below first.
Day 1: airport to the city, markets and the Yanbian University street
Yanji Chaoyangchuan International Airport (YNJ) is close to the city and served by city buses. Check routes and hours at the airport information desk. If you take a taxi or use a ride-hailing app, board at the official rank and have your hotel address ready in Chinese.
After checking in, browse the West Market and the Water Market in the city center. The West Market is one of Yanji's longest-running commercial hubs, good for browsing food and everyday goods. The riverside Water Market sells ethnic Korean foods such as kimchi and pickles, rice sausage, pounded rice cake and rice wine, plus locally grown produce. Confirm the price of kimchi and pickles before you buy.
After dark, head to the Yanbian University street. The 'viral wall' of signs and lights on the building facing the main gate photographs best once it lights up. Finish the evening with spice-dusted grilled skewers (lamb skewers).
Day 2: Changbai Mountain (Baekdusan) by high-speed train
Take an early high-speed train from Yanji West Station via Antu West and Dunhua to Changbaishan Station. Buy tickets under your passport name on the official China Railway 12306 website or app, or at station windows.
On the mountain, pick either the North or the West Slope. The North Slope is the best-equipped route: scenic-area shuttles take you up to Heaven Lake, a large waterfall, hot-spring areas, Green Abyss Pool and the Underground Forest. On the West Slope you climb 1,442 steps for a wide, level view of Heaven Lake, and there are the Jinjiang Grand Canyon and alpine flower gardens. The South Slope usually opens only in summer and may close temporarily for weather or road repairs. Check tickets, shuttles and operations in official information.
Mountain weather changes fast, so Heaven Lake is only visible on clear days and never guaranteed. Afterwards, take an evening train back to Yanji or stay a night near the mountain.

- Korea's Consulate General in Shenyang warns that weather around Heaven Lake changes very sharply and phone signal often drops; agree on how to stay in touch with your group
- Keep to permitted trails, and carry a jacket even in summer
- Don't approach the border or photograph military or restricted zones, and check whether photography is allowed first
- Avoid posing with national flags, banners or placards
- Bus accidents have occurred in the tourist season, so always wear a seatbelt
Day 3: Mao'ershan, the China Korean Folk Village and a riverside evening
Spend the morning walking in Mao'ershan National Forest Park, about 10 km south of the city. It is a Yanji landmark with views over the city and the Burhatong and Hailan rivers.
In the afternoon, visit the China Korean Folk Village next to Mao'ershan. This folk village showcases traditional ethnic Korean life and also buzzes in the evening as a night culture and food street. Check official information for hours and fees. The area is a little away from the city center.
In the evening, try Yanbian's signature cold noodles and Yanbian-style rice sausage, then stroll along the Burhatong River, which runs through the city with its banks landscaped as a water scenic area.
Day 4, and if you have one more day
On the last day, pick up rice cakes and other food souvenirs, then head to the airport with time to spare. Pounded rice cake is steamed glutinous rice pounded with wooden mallets, served with roasted soybean powder and honey, and is easy to find at markets.
With five days, add a night near the mountain (Chibei District) on day 2. You can be on the mountain early, and the rest of the city plan simply moves back a day.
Getting around, budget and when to go
Taxis and ride-hailing apps are the easiest way around town. Show your destination in Chinese and confirm how the fare works when you get in. City buses cover most of the city; check routes with a map app or local information. The Yanbian University street, the markets and the riverside are easy on foot, but sidewalks ice over in winter, so bring non-slip shoes.
Per person per day, budget about 300 CNY for a guesthouse, market food and buses; about 600-900 CNY for a city hotel, restaurants and Changbai Mountain tickets and shuttles; and about 1,500 CNY+ for an upscale hotel and a car with driver. The Chinese government says foreign visitors can link overseas cards to WeChat Pay and Alipay; payment options can change, so check before you go.
To include Changbai Mountain, summer to early autumn is best. Heaven Lake is frozen for about seven months of the year and thaws in early summer. According to 1991–2020 normals for Yanji station (China Meteorological Administration submission · WMO normals collection, NOAA NCEI), July averages a high of 27°C and a low of 18°C, August 27°C and 17°C, and October drops to a high of 15°C and a low of 1°C. July is the wettest month at about 124 mm, and August gets about 116 mm.
Winters are long and very cold (freezing period November-March), so avoid them unless snow is the goal; January's average low is -18°C. National Day week (around October 1) and the summer peak are very crowded. Entry conditions (including visa-free stay periods) can change, so check official Chinese government or embassy information.
