How many days for Ninh Binh? Two to three
Ninh Binh is a province in northern Vietnam about 90 km south of Hanoi, where limestone peaks rise from rivers and rice fields. Its highlights are the Trang An Landscape Complex, recognized by UNESCO in 2014 as a mixed natural and cultural World Heritage site, and Hoa Lu, Vietnam's capital in the 10th-11th centuries.
The guide suggests 2 to 3 days. It suits slow travelers who enjoy rowing boats through caves and cycling country lanes.
Ninh Binh has no airport. You arrive at Hanoi Noi Bai Airport (HAN) and continue through Hanoi by train or bus. Vietnam's national tourism authority describes Ninh Binh as about two hours from Hanoi.
- Day 1: via Hanoi to Ninh Binh → check in at Tam Coc → Hang Mua at dusk
- Day 2: Trang An boat route → Hoa Lu Ancient Capital
- Day 3: Bai Dinh Pagoda → Van Long or Tam Coc and Bich Dong Pagoda → Hanoi or the airport
Hanoi airport to Ninh Binh: bus plus train, bus or taxi
The first option combines a bus and a train. Take bus 86 from Noi Bai Airport to Hanoi Railway Station, then a North-South line train to Ninh Binh. Bus 86 costs about 50,000 VND. According to Vietnam's tourism authority, several trains leave Hanoi for Ninh Binh daily; check Vietnam Railways for train times and fares.
You can also go by bus only. Head into Hanoi from the airport and catch a bus to Ninh Binh. Vietnam's tourism authority notes regular daily buses from Hanoi. The ride takes about 2 hours from Hanoi but varies with traffic; check official information for fares.
Noi Bai taxis run from the first to the last flight every day, including holidays, and use meters. Ninh Binh is a long ride, so a pre-booked car is easiest with luggage or a late arrival. Check travel time and fares with official information and confirm before you ride.
Entry conditions (visa-free stay length, e-visas, etc.) can change, so check the Vietnamese government or embassy for official information before you travel.

Where should you stay? Tam Coc, Trang An, the city or Hoa Lu
For a first visit, Tam Coc is easiest. The village is surrounded by the Ngo Dong River, paddies and karst peaks, close to Mua Cave, with plenty of places to stay and eat. It is good for rice-field views, cycling and homestays.
If you want an early boat trip, stay around Trang An. It is near the Trang An boat wharf and named by Vietnam's tourism authority as a homestay area. For a heritage-focused stay, the Hoa Lu ancient capital area (Truong Yen) is about 20 minutes by car from Trang An.
Ninh Binh city center (near the station) is the easiest place to arrive by train or bus, but you will need a taxi or motorbike to reach the sights.

- Tam Coc: rice-field views, cycling, homestays
- Around Trang An: UNESCO scenery, quiet stays
- Ninh Binh city center (near the station): transport links, local life
- Hoa Lu ancient capital area (Truong Yen): history, a quieter atmosphere
Getting around Ninh Binh: boats, bikes and taxis
At Trang An and Tam Coc, a boat rower takes you along the rivers and through caves in a small rowing boat (sampan). Vietnam's tourism authority says trips take 2-3 hours, so bring water, snacks and a hat. Ticket and boat prices change often, so check at the counter and buy only at official ticket offices.
The rice-field lanes and villages around Tam Coc are ideal by bicycle, as Vietnam's tourism authority also suggests. A taxi or motorbike tour is the easiest way to link spread-out sights like Hoa Lu, Bai Dinh Pagoda and Van Long; confirm the price and route before you set off. Electric carts carry visitors around the huge Bai Dinh Pagoda complex.
- Rowing boats (sampans): Trang An and Tam Coc, 2-3 hours
- Bicycle: rice-field lanes and villages around Tam Coc
- Taxi or motorbike tour: Hoa Lu, Bai Dinh Pagoda, Van Long; confirm price and route first

A 3-day route
On Day 1, travel from Noi Bai Airport to Hanoi, then by train or bus to Ninh Binh, and check in at Tam Coc. At dusk, climb Hang Mua for views over the paddies. There are about 500 steps and they are steep, so come down while it is still light.
On Day 2, take an early boat route at Trang An (about 3 hours). Route 1 visits 9 caves and 3 spiritual sites in 3+ hours; Route 2 visits 4 caves and 3 temples in about 3 hours. Have goat and com chay, Ninh Binh's signature dishes, for lunch, then visit the temples of King Dinh and King Le at Hoa Lu in the afternoon.
On the morning of Day 3, visit Bai Dinh Pagoda. Expect about 300 steps up to the cave temples; it gets very crowded on Buddhist holidays, so avoid those dates or go early. Then choose a Van Long boat trip or Tam Coc and Bich Dong Pagoda, and head back to Hanoi or the airport with time to spare. Cover your shoulders and knees at pagodas and temples, and wear good shoes for the many steps.

- Day 1: Noi Bai Airport → Hanoi → train or bus to Ninh Binh → check in at Tam Coc → Hang Mua at dusk
