How many days? The 4-day plan and where to stay
The guide recommends 4 to 5 days in Phu Quoc. This post follows its 4-day plan day by day: a Long Beach sunset and the night market on day one, southern island-hopping and the cable car on day two, Sao Beach and pepper farms on day three, and a walk around town before the airport on the last day.
The island is big: north to south takes over an hour by car. The key is grouping sights in the same area into one day, and where you stay shapes the whole route. Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC) sits mid-way down the west coast, close to central hotels.
- Duong Dong town: first visit, night market, value. Budget stays and restaurants, close to the airport
- Long Beach (south of Duong Dong): sunsets and beach resorts, a short ride to town
- An Thoi and the south: close to the harbor for island boats, the cable car and quiet beaches; 30-40 minutes by car to town
- The north (Ganh Dau and Bai Dai): families, theme park and safari, big resorts; nearly an hour by car to town or the south
- East coast (around Sao Beach): few places to stay, so most people visit on a day trip
Day 1: airport, Long Beach and sunset, Duong Dong night market
A ride-hailing app or an electric taxi is the default way from the airport. The fare is fixed in the app, so no haggling; it is about 15-20 minutes to Duong Dong and 30-40 minutes to the south. For an airport taxi, take a reputable company's cab from the official rank and confirm the meter or fixed fare first. Many resorts in the north and south offer airport pickups (about 40-60 minutes to the north); check whether it is included when you book.
After check-in, spend the afternoon on Long Beach. On the west coast the sun sets over the sea, so arrive about 30 minutes before sunset. Tiny sand insects can bite, so use repellent and cover up around sunset. A condensed-milk or coconut coffee (about 30,000-60,000 VND) at a beach cafe goes well with the view.
Dinner is at the Duong Dong night market, an evening market with seafood, street food and souvenirs, where grilled sea urchin with scallion oil and peanuts is easy to find. Seafood from the tanks is charged by weight, so confirm the price per kilo and cooking fees before ordering.
Day 2: southern island-hopping all day, then the Hon Thom cable car
Give day two to southern island-hopping: the classic boat trip around the small southern islands for snorkeling and beach time. The harbor for island boats is in the An Thoi area, so if you stay in town allow 30-40 minutes by car.
On the way back, ride the Hon Thom cable car, a long cable car over the sea from the south to an island. The guide suggests saving it for a clear day. Check official information for hours, fares and weather closures.
Island tours and the cable car can be cancelled for weather, so book them early in your trip. Choose an operator with life jackets and safety gear, and change plans if waves are high.
Day 3: Sao Beach, pepper farms, a fish-sauce factory and the prison site
Head to Sao Beach on the south-east coast in the morning, famous for white sand and turquoise water. The east coast has few places to stay, so most people visit it like this, on a day trip.
In the afternoon, visit pepper farms and a fish-sauce factory. Phu Quoc is known for both; visits are usually free, though you may be encouraged to buy. Then stop at the Phu Quoc Prison historic site, a preserved wartime prison camp. The exhibits can be heavy going, so bear that in mind with children.
For a day with several stops like this, a car with driver for a half or full day is easiest; agree on hours and price first. End with a seafood dinner. Goi Ca Trich, thinly sliced raw fish rolled in rice paper with herbs and coconut, is the island's signature dish, and Bun Quay, noodles with shrimp and squid balls, costs about 40,000-70,000 VND at local spots.

Day 4: Dinh Cau rock temple, a town walk, souvenirs, the airport
On the last morning, visit Dinh Cau rock temple, a small shrine on a rock at the Duong Dong river mouth where fishermen prayed for safety. Then walk around Duong Dong and pick up souvenirs.
If fish sauce is on your list, note that many airlines restrict it in both cabin and checked baggage. Check your airline's rules before buying it.
The airport is about 15-20 minutes from Duong Dong, but leave with plenty of time for international check-in.

Adjusting the plan: 3 days or 5 days
With 3 days, join days 1, 2 and 4 of this plan: a Long Beach sunset and the night market, then southern island-hopping and the cable car, then Dinh Cau rock temple and a town walk before the airport.
With 5 days, spend a day in the north (Ganh Dau and Bai Dai). It has a theme park, a zoo and large resorts and suits families, but it is nearly an hour by car to town or the south. You can also keep the extra day as a buffer in case the island tour or cable car is cancelled for weather.
Before you go: getting around, budget and when to go
Ride-hailing apps and electric taxis are the default way around the island. Cheap island buses link the airport, town and sights in the south and north, but routes and frequency change often, so check the stop signs locally. Many resorts run shuttles to town, the night market and beaches; check times and booking when you check in. Riding a motorbike yourself requires a licence recognized in Vietnam, and accidents without one may not be covered by travel insurance.
Per person per day, budget about 800,000 VND for a guesthouse, local food and buses; about 2,500,000-3,000,000 VND for a beach hotel, restaurants, an island tour and ride-hailing; and about 6,000,000 VND or more with a resort, the cable car and a car with driver.
- Best time: November to April, with calm, clear water that is best for beaches and island trips
- Watch out: around July to September the west coast often has high waves that make swimming dangerous or cancel boats; check beach flags and signs
- Prices rise sharply over holidays and year-end
- Entry and visa rules can change. Check Vietnam's immigration department or embassy before you travel
