The short answer

Xi'an, known in ancient times as Chang'an, is the capital of Shaanxi Province. With more than 3,100 years of history as a city and 13 dynasties ruling from here, it is packed with sites such as the Terracotta Army, the 13.74 km City Wall and the Tang-era Giant Wild Goose Pagoda. If you love history, museums and Shaanxi's wheat-based food, Xi'an fits well.

Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province, is famous for giant pandas, fiery, tongue-tingling Sichuan food and a relaxed teahouse culture. Historic sites such as Wuhou Shrine and Du Fu Thatched Cottage are in the city, and day trips reach Sanxingdui and Dujiangyan. If food and slow city wandering come first, Chengdu fits well.

Best for: Xi'an suits travelers who want to take their time over ancient sites and museums like the Terracotta Army and the City Wall. Chengdu suits travelers who want pandas, hotpot and mapo tofu, and a break in a teahouse.

From the airport to the city

From Xi'an Xianyang International Airport (XIY), check the airport's and Xi'an Metro's official information for metro and airport bus routes and timetables. The airport has Terminals 2 and 3 plus Terminal 5 (T5), which opened on February 20, 2025, so check the terminal on your ticket first.

At Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (CTU), Metro Line 10 runs to its city-bound terminus at Wuhou Shrine station, right by Wuhou Shrine and Jinli, and you can change to other lines for the rest of the city. Chengdu also has Tianfu International Airport (TFU), so check which airport is on your ticket; Metro Line 19 links the two.

In both cities taxis are metered and ride-hailing apps are available. They are handy with heavy luggage or late arrivals; have your hotel address in Chinese.

How many days, and what it costs

Plan on 3 to 4 days for Xi'an and 4 to 5 days for Chengdu. A Xi'an plan spends one day on the City Wall, the Shaanxi History Museum and the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, and one day in Lintong for the Terracotta Army and Huaqing Palace. A Chengdu plan spreads city sights such as Wuhou Shrine, the panda base and Du Fu Thatched Cottage over three days, then adds a Day 4 trip to Sanxingdui Museum (or Dujiangyan and Mount Qingcheng).

For both cities, estimate a daily budget from sample costs. In Xi'an, over 95% of the city's 163 museums are free, including the Shaanxi History Museum's main building with a booking. In Chengdu, scenic direct bus and airport night bus fares are typical examples.

Weather by month, side by side

The best times are similar. In Xi'an, April to May and September to October are the months with average highs of about 18–27°C, and in Chengdu spring and autumn are mild and best for walking and sightseeing. Figures below: Xi'an from WMO World Weather Information Service — China Meteorological Administration (Xi'an (WMO city data), 1961–1990 normals); Chengdu from China Meteorological Administration submission · WMO normals collection (NOAA NCEI) (Chengdu Wenjiang station, 1991–2020 normals). The periods differ, so treat this as a rough comparison.

In Xi'an, September (108 mm) is the wettest month of the year. In Chengdu, July (232 mm) is the wettest month of the year, and Chengdu's summer is hot, humid and often rainy.

National Day week (around October 1) and Spring Festival are crowded in both cities. In Xi'an the Grand Tang Mall can see over 300,000 visitors a day during holidays, and in Chengdu the panda base and old streets are packed.

What you do there

In Xi'an, the Terracotta Army comes first. Emperor Qinshihuang's Mausoleum Site Museum in Lintong District combines the warrior pits, found by villagers digging a well in March 1974, with the mausoleum archaeological park (Lishan Garden), and foreign visitors must book in advance with their passport via the official website or WeChat. Huaqing Palace, about 30 km east of the city next to the Terracotta Army, fits into the same day.

In the city, walk the top of the 13.74 km City Wall, and enjoy the night scene on the 2,100 m Grand Tang Mall below the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, built in 652. Shaanxi History Museum tickets are released 5 days ahead at 17:00, so book early. The Beiyuanmen historical and cultural district is the place for Xi'an food such as biangbiang noodles, yangrou paomo and roujiamo.

In Chengdu, start with the panda base. Pandas are known to be most active in the morning, so go early. Then take in Wuhou Shrine and lantern-lit Jinli Ancient Street, the revived Qing-era lanes of Kuanzhai Alley, the teahouse in People's Park, Du Fu Thatched Cottage and Wenshu Monastery, with Sichuan hotpot, mapo tofu and dan dan noodles along the way. If you're wary of the heat, say 'wei la' (微辣, mildly spicy) when ordering. The Jinsha Site Museum is closed from December 5, 2025 to April 30, 2027.

How to choose, and what to check before you go

Choose Xi'an for ancient sites and museums, Chengdu for pandas, Sichuan food and slow wandering. In Xi'an both the Terracotta Army and the Shaanxi History Museum need real-name bookings, so plan your days around your time slots. In Chengdu, check official information ahead on whether popular sights such as the panda base need a booking.

If you want both on one trip, split your days using the suggested lengths (Xi'an 3 to 4 days, Chengdu 4 to 5 days), and check how to travel between the two cities and how long it takes separately.

Some foreign apps and services may be restricted in China. Sort out your connection (roaming, eSIM, etc.) and a Chinese map app before you go, sign up and verify Alipay and WeChat Pay, and carry a little cash too. Visa rules, including visa-free entry, change often, so check the latest official information before you travel.
