Sapporo vs Okinawa in Winter: Snow Trip or Mild Island?
A December-February trip to Japan: snowy Sapporo or mild Okinawa? We compare monthly climate normals, airport transfers, budgets and what to do in winter.

Published
The short answer
Sapporo is Hokkaido's capital. December-February is popular for snow scenes and winter festivals, but expect sub-zero temperatures and icy streets. Eat miso ramen, lamb barbecue and seafood, and take easy trips to the Otaru Canal or the Jozankei hot springs.
Okinawa is Japan's southern island region, known for emerald seas and a laid-back pace. The guide describes winter (December-February) as too cool for swimming but fine for sightseeing. Outside Naha the sights are spread across the island, so most visitors rent a car.
Best for: Sapporo suits travelers who want snowy scenery, winter festivals and hot springs and are ready for the cold. Okinawa suits those who want to skip sub-zero weather, enjoy the aquarium, sea views and road trips, and families.

From the airport to the city
Sapporo is served by New Chitose Airport. The JR Rapid Airport train from the airport station is the fastest, easiest way to Sapporo Station, at about 40 minutes. Airport buses stop at major hotels downtown, but heavy snow or traffic can make them slow.
Okinawa is served by Naha Airport. If you stay in Naha, the Yui Rail monorail to Kencho-mae or Makishi, near Kokusai-dori, is the easiest option. Rental cars are picked up at offices near the airport via a shuttle bus, and airport limousine buses serve major resorts in the north.
Check flight schedules and connections with the airlines. If you fly from Incheon, recent fares are on the route pages at the end of this article.
- Sapporo JR Rapid Airport: about 40 min to Sapporo Station, about 1,100-1,300 yen
- Sapporo airport bus: about 70-90 min, about 1,200-1,400 yen (longer in heavy snow or traffic)
- Sapporo rental car: about 1 hour to the city; avoid snowy winter roads unless you're experienced
- Okinawa Yui Rail: about 13-16 min to Kencho-mae or Makishi, about 300 yen
- Okinawa taxi: about 15 min to central Naha, metered fares (check official)
- Okinawa limousine bus: over 1 hour to northern resorts (check routes and times before you go)
- Okinawa rental car: about 10-20 min shuttle to offices near the airport (book ahead in peak season)
How many days and what budget
The guides suggest 4 to 5 days for both. For Sapporo that includes Otaru or Biei, and for Okinawa a rental car is recommended.
The guides' daily budgets are almost the same for both places. Okinawa's mid-range figure includes sharing a rental car. In Sapporo, hotels fill up early and prices rise during winter festivals, so check the dates and book ahead.
- Budget: Sapporo about 7,000-9,000 yen (hostel, ramen, subway); Okinawa about 7,000-9,000 yen (guesthouse, monorail, buses)
- Mid-range: Sapporo about 18,000-23,000 yen (business hotel, lamb barbecue, seafood); Okinawa about 18,000-24,000 yen (hotel, restaurants, shared rental car)
- Upscale: about 45,000 yen+ in both (Sapporo: upscale hotel, onsen ryokan, crab dinners; Okinawa: beach resort, agu pork dinners)
- Meal examples: Sapporo miso ramen about 900-1,300 yen, lamb barbecue about 2,000-4,000 yen per person; Okinawa soba about 700-1,000 yen, agu pork about 3,000-6,000 yen per person
December to February weather side by side
These are 1991–2020 normals from the Japan Meteorological Agency: Sapporo station for Sapporo and Naha station for Okinawa, rounded to whole numbers.
Temperature is the big difference. In Sapporo, daytime highs stay at 0-2°C for all three months and lows are below freezing. In Okinawa, highs are about 20-22°C and lows about 15-17°C. January is the coldest month of the year in both.
Precipitation in these three months is at a similar level in both places. In Okinawa, December-February is clearly below its average month, and January is the least rainy month of the year. In Sapporo, December and January are above its average month and February is slightly below, so winter is not a particularly dry season there.
- December: Sapporo high 2°C, low -4°C, precipitation 115 mm / Okinawa high 22°C, low 17°C, precipitation 110 mm
- January: Sapporo high 0°C, low -6°C, precipitation 108 mm / Okinawa high 20°C, low 15°C, precipitation 102 mm
- February: Sapporo high 0°C, low -6°C, precipitation 92 mm / Okinawa high 20°C, low 15°C, precipitation 115 mm
What to do in winter
Odori Park is the heart of a Sapporo winter. Winter festival dates and layouts change each year, so check the official site. On cold days, the underground walkways between Sapporo Station, Odori and Susukino make getting around easy, and in the evening you can eat miso ramen or lamb barbecue in Susukino. Otaru, about 30-40 minutes by JR, is loveliest at dusk when the canal's gas lamps light up, and the guide's itinerary adds the Jozankei hot springs on day 4 in winter.
An Okinawa winter is about sightseeing and driving rather than swimming. Drive north to Churaumi Aquarium (go early morning or late afternoon for fewer crowds) and Kouri Bridge, then catch the sunset at Cape Manzamo or American Village. Sefa-utaki in the south and Kokusai-dori in Naha fit in well too.
Shuri Castle Park was rebuilt after a 2019 fire. The main hall is scheduled to open to the public from November 23, 2026, with advance reservations for the interior, so check the official site for what's open. Ferries from Naha to the Kerama Islands may not run in bad weather.

- Sapporo: Odori Park winter festival, underground walkways, Otaru Canal at night, Jozankei hot springs, seafood bowls at Nijo Market, Mt Moiwa night views (the ropeway may stop in bad weather)
- Okinawa: Churaumi Aquarium, the drive over Kouri Bridge, sunsets at Cape Manzamo and American Village, Sefa-utaki, Shuri Castle Park, Kokusai-dori
How to choose, and what to check
If you want a proper winter of snow scenes, winter festivals and hot springs, choose Sapporo. If you'd rather avoid sub-zero weather and enjoy road trips and sea views, choose Okinawa. The guides' budgets are almost the same, so decide by weather and how you want to get around.
Driving is another deciding point. In Sapporo you can get around by subway, underground walkways and JR, and if you've never driven on snow, use trains or bus tours instead of a winter rental car. In Okinawa a rental car is the standard, but in Naha you can manage without one on the Yui Rail, and bus tours bundle the main sights. Japan drives on the left, and foreign licenses usually require an International Driving Permit; check official rules before you go.
Japan's entry requirements can change, so check official information before you travel.
- Sapporo: from December to March sidewalks are icy and very slippery, so wear shoes with good grip and consider slip-on ice cleats sold locally
- Sapporo: bring a warm coat, gloves and a hat, and dress in layers since indoors is warm
- Okinawa: most rentals must be returned with a full tank
- Both: some small eateries and markets are cash only
- Both: Japan's tax-free shopping switches to a pay-first, refund-at-departure system from November 2026 (check official information)
